How Not To Get Your Knickers In A Twist

Whatever we’re wearing we want to be comfortable, right? Yes. Ok, so we might have to endure tighter fabric for the night, but it’s all for our own good! If we have wobbly bottoms, sticky out tummies or other bits we’d rather smooth down, the best thing is to invest in some great shapewear. We agree, there are so many brands and styles to choose from, so how do you know which is best for you? Identify your ‘problem’ area and decide what support or pull-in power you need. Go for firm support rather than lightweight for maximum help and always get the size closest to your dress size. Assuming you’re not going for the tied too tightly sausage look, never buy shapewear a size too small, it won’t work!

Miraclesuit have some great shapewear with good pull-in power – they don’t purport to be a sexy garments, but boy will you notice the difference when you pull on your favourite party dress. We also love Maidenform for its Waistnipper, which trims the waist and pulls in a less than taut tummy; in fact, if you check out their online store you can even filter shapewear by ‘problem area’ – perfect!

If you’re on the search for good-looking shapewear (and let’s face it, who wouldn’t), take a look at Mission Control: great name and great shapewear! Our favourites are the Hi-Waist Brief – we don’t call these Superhero pants for nothing: they look ultra cool and because the fabric is souper douper, it actually pulls you in. We also love their Boudoir Range (above image), which is a little more gentle when it comes to pulling in, however you’ll be hard pushed to find better smoothing knickers – and they’re darn sexy!

How To Get Noticed

Most of us love to get noticed – as long as it’s for the right reasons. If you’re looking to get yourself noticed at this year’s Christmas party, remember to get things into perspective. Boobs spilling out of a blouse isn’t a good look, especially when you are trying to impress. Smart, elegant and a hint of fun is a much better look when it comes to the office party. When shapewear won’t pull us into the shape we want, why not go for a corset? Regardless of your shape you will look a stunner.

Remember our recommendation when buying shapewear? We recommend doing the same when buying a corset – especially when it’s prêt-à-porter. We also recommend going for as good a label as you can afford. Vollers, a long established label from the UK, is a great start and you can get yourself an overbust corset for around £123, in a range of gorgeous colours. Another all time favourite is Velda Lauder, whose corsets have been seen on the likes of burlesque star Dita von Teese and the beautiful Sugarbabes as well as featured in Robbie Williams’ Love Light video. You can now get yourself kitted out in one of Velda’s ready to wear underbust corset for £120 – and we can vouch for the four-inches-off-your-waist promise! Wear it over a gorgeous blouse or shirt or even a dress and you’ll look amazing – though we do advise wearing a well-fitting bra for support and decency. (nipple tassels can be kept for the boudoir)

We also love the Cabaret corset by What Katie Did (above image); we’re not suggesting you go for the frilly pants and top hat at a public party (though they do look darling), however if you’re looking for something special to accentuate your sparkle, it’s an elegant option that can be dressed up or down, depending on your mood!

Who isn’t in love with Mad Men right now? Unsurprisingly Christina Hendricks aka Joan Harris appears to be the world’s current belle, with her wonderfully glamorous outfits and celebrated curves. Harris-mania is not only hitting the media and influencing the fashion-conscious, it’s shaping the way we think about lingerie: emails asking about the availability of Harris/Olson/Draper style lingerie and Mad Men-inspired press releases are entering our inbox ever more frequently.

Mad Men’s Peggy and Joan

While we adore the Harris style and beauty, we think Peggy’s ‘ugly betty’ character is underrated – the once timid girl has toughened and the don’t-mess-with-me lady is gradually emerging as the butterfly we were all waiting for!

We’re not trying to get a cat fight going and it’s not about who’s got better what-nots, we’re taking a good look at the lingerie that make those outfits look so wonderfully wonderful. We’re talking well-fitting bras and knickers that give you Joan and Peggy’s look, and the shapewear that will help create those famous curves, whoever you decide you want to be!

Mad Men’s Joan Harris – Lingerie

A Joan-style bust needs support – and unless you are a creature of gravity-defying awesomeness, an accentuated bust line a la Mad Men is likely to need more than just any old bra. Those hoping for the pointy boobed look can take a look at What Katie Did‘s gorgeous Harlow Bra (up to an F cup) and Made by Niki’s Sheer Wireless Bra (up to a FF cup). Those with dimensions above an F cup can go for a good full-cup bra, which will look fabulous under a tight-fitting jumper or dress. We love Rigby & Peller’s Vintage Full Cup Bra and their Alondra Full Cup in black – both go up to a fabulous H cup and will give you the shape you’re looking for. If you’re a fan of lower-cut tops and like to reveal a little more, Rigby & Peller also do Plunge versions of the Vintage and Alondra style.

Once you’ve established your favourite style of bra, it’s on to shapewear – the trick to the Joan Harris look is to create sculpted curves that highlight waist, bust and bottom (without being tarty). Since Knickers started five years ago, a lot has happened to shapewear – it is no longer a garment you need to hide, in fact my recent experience with new label Mission Control makes me want to run around showing everyone what great knickers I’m wearing! I don’t, but you get my point. For larger cup ladies, it’s advisable to go for ‘bra-less’ shapewear; shapewear brands rarely cater for anything over an E cup and that’s if you’re lucky. Maidenform’s Ultimate Waistnipper is a firm favourite for doing what it says it will – I’ve found it even gives my bust a wee bit of extra oomph in the right direction, leaving it desirably Mad Men perky. We also love Mission Control for their range in sexy shapewear knickers – their Boudoir Contour Knickers are perfect for that smooth bottom feel and look, and if you’re looking for a derrière and waist smoother in one, try their Alias Sculpting Knickers. Miraclesuit are also at the top of our list for their range in control wear, including high waist slips and thigh slimmers.

To finish off the look, why not go for stockings and a girdle? Velda Lauder’s gorgeously seductive Mesh Panty Girdle is one of our favourites with its sexy soft ruffles and practical, metal suspender clasps. We also love the Underbust Girdle by What Katie Did.

We’re thinking Joan Harris would work overtime to buy herself the best stockings and we’re loving the authentic 50s style Tentation Stockings by Cervin.

(Oh, and while it might not be lingerie, we adore Joan’s pen necklace – currently at the top of the wishlist is this 1928 gold pen necklace!)

Peggy Olson’s Lingerie Style

Peggy Olson’s look is a cuter, girlier image than that of Joan Harris: working with a smaller frame is a different ball game, though no less coveted. Those with Peggy proportions are less restricted in terms of bra choice and the distinctive, cone-shaped bra is perfect for those hoping to get the look. If you want to splash out, Rigby & Peller’s Platinum Retro Bra is a winner and those looking to boost their profile will love the additional padding. Kiss Me Deadly’s Longline Jolie Bra (up to DD cup) will give the desired effect when worn under a cute office dress and if you’re a fan of stockings, go for the ever popular Vargas Dress, which supports your bust and gives you that streamlined look. Want to go with your own bra? Go for a Kiss Me Deadly roll on girdle – I can vouch for its functional sexiness!

Peggy might be less curvy than Joan, but shapewear will still be of benefit, to accentuate and celebrate femininity. Again, Maidenform comes out as one of the favourites for shapewear – whether you’re trying to conceal, highlight or both! Anything that nips in at the waist will give the bust and bottom an opportunity to shine and will naturally emphasise your middle. If restriction on bra sizing is not as much of an issue, why not go for a functional yet sexy all-in-one? We’re thinking along the lines of a Corselette that will nip, tuck and support and be sexy.

Peggy’s bright mind suggests that an evening worth remembering is going to have to be accompanied by a great pair of stockings – her day to day wear might involve sensible, durable legwear, but take her on a night out and we reckon she’ll go for Blush nylons!

Feeling left out is no good for anyone. We often find when we write an article about large bra sizes, we get emails from those who have problems finding a bra to fit their more petite proportions. One of the reasons why we promote labels and designers who concentrate on large sizes, is because up until only a few years ago, ladies with large boobs didn’t get a look in when it came to pretty bras. Added to that, the Knickers girls are now all above a DD cup!

Trying to find beautiful bras large or small, outside what is the perceived norm, is not easy; and those who think smaller cupped ladies are quids in when it comes to finding their perfect bra, probably need to think again. A petite frame with small girls can be as much of a ‘problem’ as someone with a large frame and big girls.

Smaller Cup Bras

As someone who used to be somewhere in the region of a AA cup and a 28 back, I found it virtually impossible to get a bra that fit me and didn’t feel like someone had attached part of a mattress to my chest. Yes, I occasionally felt like I wanted to oomph the girls up a bit, but for every day wear, I wanted something that didn’t promise I would have a better life if my boobs were pushed up within an inch of their tiny lives.

Ok, so petite ladies with petite girls don’t need as much support in the boob department, but by no means does that excuse tacky designs and unpleasant padding. Bras that are designed to fit and look good are what we look for, no matter what the size!

Luckily there are various options for those with smaller cup requirements; it’s just a matter of preference.

Choose your favourite

If you can’t live without underwire, take a look at Lulalu (top images); they have a great range of A and AA cup bras – whether you’re looking for an everyday T-shirt bra or something more special. Check out their red satin bra, which is perfect if you like elegance without the Schnickschnack, as they say in German. The online store, Eve’s Apples (yes, we had a little giggle) is also worth looking at: we like The Little Lingerie Company’s plunge bra – yes, it’s padded and yes, it is lacey, but it’s not over the top!

Those blessed with smaller proportions can also wear underwire or non-underwired bras and bralets; these are usually sized small, medium and large and come in a large variety of fabrics and designs. They’re delightfully comfortable to wear day-to-day and the great thing about these is that there are so many different designs on offer. One of our favourites is Lailides (above), a brand that concentrates on the smaller cupped lady without compromising on style or fit. We also love that they make bras suitable for all sized bodies and that they are “on a mission to make the difficulty of shopping for small size bras a thing of the past.” What more could we ask for!

There’s always room for a treat!

Whatever your size, there’s nothing better than treating yourself to something special and if you fancy delicate silk and vintage lace, Ayten Gasson’s designs at La Magia are perfect. Go for a bralet or a more structured bra and you’ll fall in love the moment you touch it! You can also find stunning unstructured bras in smaller sizes at Catriona Mackechnie, who stock luxury labels like the amazing Bordelle and the fabulously flirty Gonzalez.

Vraiment Jolie!

The elegantly-named new collection by Kiss Me Deadly is beautiful. We’ve always been a fan of KMD, but with the light, springy colour it’s like finding a whole new label! There is a certain je ne sais quois about the ballet shoe peach that makes the Madonna a la Gaultier bra so special. We love a longline bra and although we dearly wish we could persuade them to increase the cup sizes (so all of us could benefit), it’s reassuring that Kiss Me Deadly produce true-to-size designs that work.

It’s no suprise that KMD’s suspenders look tantalizing; their functional, six strap designs and proper, metal clasps are fabulous and essential for holding up your silk stockings (you’ll get none of that pulling or cutting in you get with flimsy ‘fashion’ suspenders). As someone who has had the privilege to have been laced up into one of Velda Lauder’s amazing corsets (by the lovely and talented lady herself) I can vouch for how fabulous they really are. Lingerie Noir for the Holidays

I am a big fan of  the divine Mlle. Frou Frou blog, she post the most amazing lingerie photos, the latest happenings in the world of lingerie and what’s new at Faire Frou Frou.   A couple of weeks ago her post Lingerie Noir featured photos from a Film Noir inspired shoot by Paolo Roversi for Vogue Italy.  Not only were the images stunning they were also achievable, in both price and look, for mortal women.  They used designers including What Katie Did, La Perla, Rago Shapewear, and Cervin Hosiery -they produce stocking for Agent Provocateur, so with a little detective work of my own, I found similar pieces from these designers and more at great prices and some even On Sale!

It doesn’t matter how gorgeous the bra might be (and luckily, this one is!), the main concern is that it gives the absolute best shape under the dress. I love Rigby & Peller as a bridal pick because they tick all the boxes: excellent quality fabric to give the best support, excellent sizing, very comfortable bras, and beautiful designs to boot. This ice-blue “Dragonfly” set is currently at the top of my list for wedding-day lingerie, and it’s going to take something pretty special to boot it off! A “Dragonfly” bra is £71 and a knicker is around £43, depending on the style you choose.

A good corset – What Katie Did’s “Sophia” Corst

Brides in strapless gowns need a good quality corset to keep them comfortable and everything held in place – the worst thing to imagine is walking down the aisle and hitching up your dress! Vollers is an obvious choice and has some beautiful options, but I prefer this raw silk creation from What Katie Did. The Sophia’s simple design won’t cause any trouble under a silk dress, but it still has a sexy, playful style. The corset is £140 and is best suited for smaller to medium cup sizes, going up to an E-cup.

A great wedding night set – Hannah Dulcie’s “Florence”

The wedding day lingerie is all about support and practicality, but on the wedding night you can forget all of that and just go for pure decadence. That’s why I love this simple silk set from Hannah Dulcie – the cut of the bra is oh-so-provocative and will delight any groom, but the set itself is elegant and simple, using vintage laces and silk-covered buttons to add those special details. For those brides who don’t prefer the virginal white, Hannah also offers a similar set in vixen black. The white set is £150 and the black set is £85.

I’m still months away from the big day (the wedding is August!) and we haven’t even been to Paris to see the new collections, so I’m sure there will be many more bridal picks to come!
