With brands increasing their cup sizes and articles such as ‘Why Don’t More Designers Make Plus Size Bras?‘ on the increase, we should be rejoicing; but it seems women are still confused and disillusioned when it comes to bra sizes.

Changing Times

With a US lingerie site introducing a 12D cup (instead of using K), we’re increasingly thinking that in the case of bra sizing there’s some sort of phobia about the letters that follow D. To illustrate how ridiculous this is, a 12D is literally a DDDDDDDDDDDD. Why is it so difficult for people to get their heads around a K cup? Big boobs ain’t going to bite, but those suffering with back, neck and shoulder pain due to ill fitting and non-supportive bras, may well do!

One of Knickers’ most read articles, America’s Denial of Larger Cup Bras, is still being found and commented on, three years after it was posted; judging by the comments, the problem is still very much alive for far too many women. But it’s not just the denial of cup sizes that is the issue, it’s also the outdated measuring method so many stores use for bra-fitting, and it’s not just the US who are getting it wrong. I’ve just entered my measurements into a UK bra-sizing calculator and incredibly, it came up with a 36A when I’m actually a 32E. Given the scale of inaccuracy for my own size, I’m quivering at the thought of someone actually going by these results and spending money on a bra. It’s no wonder there doesn’t appear to be a shift in the ’85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size’ statistic.

Get Real!

It doesn’t help that well-known busty women have publicly claimed completely wrong bra sizes. The UK’s national ‘boob treasure’ Jordan, aka Katie Price, apparently claimed to only be a G cup, but only after her self-named D-G cup lingerie range was introduced. Other famous busts like Pamela Anderson and Dolly Parton claim to be DD cups, which should put my E in the realms of fantasy. But I’m perfectly real; I’m a fairly slender UK size 12, with a bust that fits into size 12 clothes (if you need to be convinced, check out the photo here).

Although the message of needing larger cup bras is important, it’s the availability and the ability to properly fit a bra that now needs to happen as well. Bra fitting isn’t just about larger cups, it’s about achieving a good fit for any size. If you want to find out your correct bra size, our advice is, don’t use a bra calculator; use your dress size as a guide and check out our DIY bra-fitting guide, which will help you to decide whether you’re wearing the right bra size. We also like the video below, which perfectly demonstrates how much better a proper-fitting bra looks and feels, without the hindrance of a bra calculator or measuring tape!

Getting Fitted Properly

If you go to a store to get fitted, remember to go to one where larger cup bras are sold (look for sizes like G and H); this will make it more likely for you to come out with the right size, as stores won’t suggest a size that they don’t stock!

And remember, size does matter because once you find the right size, you’ll never look back!

How I learned to stop worrying and love Elle Machperson

Over the years, I’ve learned to be cynical about designers who push their ranges up to a G-cup, especially bigger brands. While I’m always delighted to see the labels make the effort, I’ve learned personally that not all labels make the necessary adjustments to the grading, fabric, and structure of the bra to make something that fits properly and is comfortable to wear all day. My lingerie drawer is full of lovely larger-cup bras that either pinch, dig in, stretch, or just generally look awful after a few wears — it’s an expensive testament to the difficulties of creating a great larger-cup bra!

So when I heard that Elle Macpherson was coming out with a new G-cup range, I didn’t jump out my seat to try it out — I had quite enough “20 minutes only” bras, thank you! Thankfully though, the kind girls at Boudiche gifted me an Elle Macpherson set for a wedding present (thank you ladies!), so I took the plunge after all. And ladies? Elle has cracked it on her first try!

This Artistry Retro bra is comfortable, beautiful, feminine, and most importantly, affordable. I’m accustomed to paying anything from £55 to £100 for a good larger-cup bra, so to see £35 (or $57) on this label was a very welcome change. It’s still not a super-cheap bra, but it also doesn’t feel “cheap” — the lace is soft, lies beautifully and is supportive, the little ribbon detail on the cups extends onto the bra straps and adds a gorgeous touch, and the overall shape of the bra is absolutely lovely, especially for my size. It’s still quite difficult to find a supportive, comfortable larger-cup balconette shape, and this one fits me like a dream. The creamy colour is very flattering for my super-pale skin, but I think would also look great against darker skin-tones.

In short, this is a great wee set and a pleasant surprise from Elle Macpherson. My lesson is learned – I won’t make assumptions too quickly about big labels, because sometimes, they can surprise you!

Today I’m reviewing Kiki de Montparnasse and East 13. Alas, I didn’t make it to Coco de Mer (co-owned by Dave Stewart -of the Eurythmics) maybe next time.

I probably caught Kiki de Montparnasse on a bad day, because per Yelp Los Angeles, I should have been greeted with a glass of champagne. Instead it was 100 degrees, no air conditioner and next to no service, the salesperson did offered me a glass of water. Unfortunately, she didn’t know much about the stock or the KdM line -like who designed their corsets (Cadolle) or whether a rack of clothing was vintage (it wasn’t). The store manager ignored me, probably frustrated by the non-functioning AC. Sadly I left without anything . On the upside Kiki has a beautiful shop and patio, they carry several pair of Strumpet & Pink knickers -absolutely divine, the Paul Seville laser-cut masks are decadent and their website sale page allows mere mortals to actually own a bit of high-end kink. Right now most things are half price, but there should be an end of summer sale shortly where you will see prices marked down by 75% like they did back in January. I will probably stop by again if I’m in the area, just to see if it was an off day.

East 13 was much larger and nicer than I expected -I only had their website to base my opinion. They have large beautiful dressing rooms, lots of lovely pieces and the Vagin Pouvoir Sale ($55 a set), but once again trying to engage the salesperson wasn’t easy, once I did, she determined the Elle MacPherson line was best for me -oblivious to my bust size or the sizes available for that brand. As for Vagin Pouvoir the designs are beautiful but, sadly, the fit is just ok which was a bit disappointing -originally these sets were $500. I didn’t buy anything at East 13 but it’s worth a visit, especially if you like to shop -E. Colorado Blvd is wonderful, so you will come away with something eventually. If you’re not in the area do check out their great sales page and additional online discounts.

What I’ve learned so far is that customer service is what separate the boutiques in business from the ones going out of business. They can’t compete with big box stores like T.J. Maxx Runway or Neiman Marcus Last Call as far as prices are concerned. Selection helps a lot -though I saw past seasons stock selling at current seasons prices, but service is key. A knowledgeable staff, excited about lingerie will make a sale, it was the difference between Faire Frou Frou and East 13.
