Product Review: Elizabeth Cotton Pajamas

March 27, 2006 by Danae

Elizabeth Cotton PJ\'s

One Christmas, Elizabeth Cotton found herself in a predicament — it was her first Christmas at her fiance’s parents, and she needed a pair of Christmas-morning pajamas that were sensible enough to wear with his family, but still fashionable enough to avoid the senior citizen look. Her search went on for days, but finally came up empty — she couldn’t find a practical, cute pair of pajamas. And so, the Elizabeth Cotton brand was born.

Elizabeth Cotton pajamas are all about classic design executed beautifully, with the very best of fabrics and detailing — Elizabeth uses luxury-brand Liberty fabrics for her playful printed pajamas, and the fabric for her sateen egyptian cotton pajamas is produced by a European weaver that’s been running since the 18th Century. Elizabeth takes her fabrics seriously, and it’s obvious in her final product — I love these cozy, smart PJ’s.

I tried the most popular print at Cotton, the brightly-coloured Azure Peacock pajamas for $210 (pictured left). I was expecting a heavy pair of thick pajamas, but when i lifted them out of the wrapping paper, they were remarkably thin and light, almost crisp. The pajamas stay that way even after weeks of wear, retaining this lovely tailored feeling that’s not too soft, but not too stiff as well. If you’re looking for something that’s ultra-soft, I would recommend the lovely Egyptian-cotton Sateen versions — the fabric is incredibly luxurious, and the price is even smaller than the printed versions at $185.

Elizabeth Cotton in a variety of prints

The style of the pajamas are retro-chic — the pedal-pusher style bottoms are sweet and quirky, and the top’s wide collar, slightly-oversized buttons, and three-quarter sleeves are equally adorable. I love that these pajamas are timeless — I could just as easily buy them for my memaw as buy them for myself, and they’d suit both of us.

The Elizabeth Cotton pajamas come in a variety of lovely prints, or if you want something more understated, you can get the Sateen versions in crisp white and blue. If you aren’t a fan of the classic styling and are looking for something a little more modern, Elizabeth has a limited collection of other styles available in some retail stores (try Lingerie on Lex in NYC). Her other items are made of the same amazing fabrics but have more variety, like a cute cami top and chemises.

At around $200 these pajamas are a luxury, but one of those every day luxuries that you can justify to yourself — we indulge our homes with Egyptian cotton sheets and curtains, why not treat ourselves to the same? Elizabeth Cotton’s pajamas are available from XS to XL, and will ship internationally. Go check out her lovely PJ’s now!
