Lingerie Review: Danae tries Modern Courtesan’s “Do Disturb” Set

Modern Courtesan is one of the hottest new labels this season, and we’ve been dying to find out if their “seduction wear” lingerie is as good as it looks. Modern Courtesan’s look transcends the “trashy” stigma normally attached to costumes, but what’s it like in real life? Can I really pull off what is essentially a glamorous French maid costume?

Did this set have enough style? Definitely. Despite wearing an alarming amount of tulle and organza, I never once felt ridiculous or “costumey” in this outfit. In fact, despite the bold sexiness of the designs, Modern Courtesan’s pieces are brilliant because they’re so subtle: each set has a “look” like French maid or sailor girl, but the set stands up as a gorgeous piece on its own right as well. I could easily wear this corset to a dressy night out, without anyone suspecting I had a matching feather duster back home.

Modern Courtesan’s corsets are all soft corsets, meaning they don’t have any boning to create those extreme narrow waists we normally think of. They wanted to focus on comfort and wearability, so while you can lace up the corset quite tightly, you’ll still be able to move around freely without too much tightness. This means that larger-cup sizes like myself will lose out on a bit of the support, but I found that tightening the upper laces while keeping the lower ones looser worked just fine as a compromise.

The “Do Disturb” corset is only advertised for sizes S, M, and L, but it’s actually made to order, meaning women of all sizes can own one. I’m an XL, but Modern Courtesan just asked me to send in a few measurements, and the set came back fitting perfectly.

VPL: 2/5
I also tried out the matching ribbon-backed briefs, which as you would suspect, weren’t very VPL-friendly. But really, that’s not a fair test of these gorgeous silk knickers, as they fit beautifully, were comfortable, and looked amazing on. Sure, you can’t exactly wear them under those slacks, but who cares when you’ve got ribbony silk knickers!

Value for Money: 3/5
We won’t pretend that this lingerie is very practical — it’s not exactly office-friendly and won’t hide away under your knit tops and wool slacks. It will, however, let you indulge in a delightfully impractical side of yourself — it’s a sexy little number that is so well done that you can justify spending the money on it. You may keep it carefully wrapped in its black tissue paper most of the time, but you’ll definitely feel amazing every time you unwrap this set.
