The days of jumping around in a ballet studio with nothing other than a skimpy leotard are over: bigger everything has got the better of me. I came to this conclusion when I started going back to the gym a while back (I decided ten years was enough of a rest), only to realise anything sporty still lurking in the back of my drawers looked like it had been designed with a small doll in mind.

Not wanting to draw attention to myself (although the beetroot face did a good job) I decided not to go over the top with spanking new sports gear, and instead went for a hold-them-in-place sports bra. Finding a good sports bra wasn’t as easy as I thought. I eventually settled on one which allowed no movement and was perfect for running. Some may call this vain but having to wear multiple layers, to avoid anyone noticing my very peculiarly-shaped boobs, was, in my view, a necessity. I have therefore been on the lookout for a more appealing sports bra – and I think I’ve found it:

Anita is a brand I generally associated with well-fitting, but not the most exciting-looking maternity and post surgery bras. I now hold my hands up and admit: I read the book by its title (Anita lives in Germany and wears a Dirndl, in case you were wondering) and I was wrong. Anita’s sports range has got its cool factor just right. It also has its sizing just right, which is crucial when you’re bouncing up and down at a pretty alarming heart rate. What I really loved about this Extreme Control sports bra is that it’s super comfortable and it didn’t shift a millimetre, until I took it off. Reviewing a sports bra while you’re pounding along can be a great distraction, especially when trying to sneak a peek at the girls while at full speed. I did observe that the Anita sports bra is more of a ‘gather and hold’ rather than ‘separate and hold’ kind of a garment – this means you get a cleavage rather than two independent boobs. For my average-sized 32E bust, it wasn’t a problem at all, and in fact I felt somewhat more comfortable than usual (or was it my vanity that was soothed?)

I also loved loved loved the shorts: I’ve never realised the need for sports knickers, though in the past they may not have been necessary. These shorts are so amazingly comfortable I really could do with wearing them all the time and the added bonus is, they actually held me in – Shapewear for the (hopeful) Olympian! Oh, and as if that wasn’t enough, the shorts also appeared to help an all too common problem of my trousers falling down mid run, though I’m not sure I’d care anyway, because these shorts look so good!

The verdict:
If you’re into fairly high impact sports, buy both and buy in all colours!

Retail $40, on sale $6 and striped cotton shorts (C) Retail $33, on sale for $3 at Sierra Trading Post.   Last year I picked up a wonderful night shirt from Calida I loved, so I bought this set hoping for the same results.  The tank top is wonderfully soft, holds up well in the wash and a great deal at $6.  The shorts are really cute, however the elastic waist has unfortunately stretched out leaving them rather too big. They are great kick around shorts and the price is virtually impossible to beat, if however you do decide to buy the shorts, it’s worth going down a size.  Both items are currently still on sale at Sierra Trading Post.

Wundervoll Cassava Hi-Waist Briefs

Retail $160, on sale $48 at Journelle.  I loved Alison’s post on Wundervoll and I’m am always in search for the perfect hi-waist knickers and when I finally got to see the (sold out) silk jersey Boogie Briefs I was hooked.  These knickers are really wonderful with amazing attention to detail and at 70% off it was a no-brainer.  The Cassava knicker is not made of  silk but of a new eco-polyester yarn based on the innovative polyester polymer polytrimethylene-terephtalate (PPT).  What that means to me:  Sexy & Green.  These are also still on sale at Journelle – but hurry, stock is extremely limited!

Shapewear is fast becoming one of the most popular items we are asked to review. We love it, because it not only gives us the chance to try different brands and styles, it means shapewear has truly arrived as a must-have undergarment. When my Torsette arrived I immediately and affectionately named it my ‘flak jacket’: this baby looked like it meant serious business. What struck me at first glance were the wide straps and the fabric: the straps are made of almost foamy type fabric, which means there’s no digging in or uncomfortable slippage. The rest of the Torsette is designed with reinforced panels, and a gummy strip at the bottom to avoid it riding up. Having got the picture you may now appreciate the reasoning behind the renaming – this rather brilliant garment has got to have been designed by a team of structural engineers!

As with all shapewear I’ve tried, there are bits I would change: for my body shape and size I would love for the Torsette to be a little longer, with the firm control panel extending to the tummy area. Having said that, I am very impressed with its stay-in-place power; it feels secure, it smoothes and it’s very comfortable.

Verdict:
Does it make me look 10lbs lighter in 10 seconds? It certainly makes me look like I exercise a great deal more than I do – I’m not sure I can vouch for the 10 seconds, though give me 60 and I’ll give it the thumbs up! Yes, the Miraclesuit Torsette is a darn good addition to my shapewear wardrobe and if you’re a fan of figure hugging clothing, it’s great way to accentuate your figure – and the nude colour is a winner under a white T-shirt too!

Longtime Knickers readers will know that I suffer from that awful, painful malaise known as “chub rub,” where the tops of your thighs rub together uncomfortably when you’re walking. It’s an embarrassing, painful, and little talked-about problem that makes women feel awful about themselves and keeps us out of the clothes that we like. Chub rub robbed me of the ability to wear dresses for many years of my life, until finally, I discovered thigh shaping shorts early last year – I’ve worn nothing but dresses ever since!

I have to admit, it took me a while to get used to wearing non-shapewear shorts. I’ve practically lived in my Maidenform thigh shapers for the past year, so these shorts initially felt way too loose. I also found that the shorts tended to ride up a little bit, which eventually gave me the same chub rub problems.

After talking to Thigh Society about my problems, they recommended I go a size down – this helped tremendously, and made the shorts jump from “okay” to “great” in my book. The smaller size felt comfortably in-place, didn’t ride up, and finally showed me that I don’t have to wear shapewear every day to combat my chub rub! The only slight niggle I had left was that the legs could be slightly longer, for that extra little bit of thigh coverage.

I tend to wear my Thigh Society shorts for casual use – running to the shops, padding around the house, anytime that I can’t be bothered to wrangle myself into my shapewear shorts. They are softer, cooler, and more comfortable than shapewear, and are a god-send for me; every time i’m pawing through my underwear drawer and pull out my Thigh Society shorts, I have a little internal sigh of relief — ahh, i know i’ll be comfortable. That might be a little difficult to understand if you don’t suffer from chub rub, but those women who do will know exactly the kind of frustration that i’m talking about!

In a lot of ways, Thigh Society shorts are like a pair of your boyfriend’s boxers, but adapted for a woman. If you walk right past the skirts and dresses because you think you can never wear them, definitely give Thigh Societies a try – you might find yourself with a whole new wardrobe!

The start of our Scottish summer was promising: it was unusually warm and sunny! As always we were out in our droves and feeling continental, now cafes and pubs have realised the importance of providing outdoor seating. It was all very exciting. Until the rain began to lash down: relentless is probably the only way to describe it. The Verdict: Do I have to take it off?

One rainy morning a parcel arrived: it was packed with lingerie. A box of pretty things is a very good way to start the day and it’s even better when the pretty things look like they’ve been designed with you in mind! After pulling out each piece with an Ooh and an Aah, I came across the Ophelia Playsuit. Although I’m in possession of a teddy or two, I’ve never actually found a bodysuit I really want. This I wanted.

Liya Amar, a former senior designer for London-based High Street stores, is now a freelance designer and alongside it decided to come up with her own label, La Lilouche. Based in Tel-Aviv, Liya uses beautiful silks, Chantilly lace and Swarovski Crystals to enhance her stunning collections that encompass both contemporary design and boudoir elegance. It’s no wonder I fell in love with her lingerie!

Before I had the honour of actually trying the Playsuit, I had seen it in the images (above); the sheerness of the silk, the gorgeous back and delicate lace appealed more than anything I have seen for some time. While we like to harp on about the importance of images, it is of course the actual design and fabric that are the ultimate test; but somehow I could see this suit was going to be a winner. And it most certainly is.

I’m not sure I have ever come across a more flattering design: the roomy silk chiffon is incredibly forgiving. Even in the days before I had any right to complain about my tummy, I did – if only La Lilouche had entered my life way back! The gentle, silk tie that draws together the oh-so-sexy cut out back is divine, and performs beautifully whichever look you decide upon. The bottom or knicker part of the suit was the part that surprised me most: with my aforementioned tummy issues, I tend to go for a bigger knicker – unless I’m feeling very brave (or insanely chirpy); the playsuit’s knicker part stopped in a normally worrying place and yet succeeded in giving me the best shape I think I’ve ever seen. It was a true lingerie miracle moment!

I love lingerie and have never been the type to keep it for ‘special occasions’ or wait until I can share it with a significant other (though I do have some pretty understanding friends who don’t mind me parading new items in front of them). My Ophelia Playsuit has therefore had a lot of wear already and has stood the test of wear-wash-wear-wash. I absolutely adore it and I’m already hoping Liya will consider making the suit in a different colour – just so I can admire myself in another shade!

Although I don’t think my love for new shapewear will ever end, I am becoming pickier and pickier. A lot of undergarments pass our eyes and through sheer necessity we now have an inbuilt is-it-good-is-it-not filter. When something impresses us, it has to be good.

Let me start with the name of the shapewear in question: Mission Control. I love the name and I love the Bond style target on the label, and I adore the designs. You may think this a little controversial, but there are very few shapewear labels out there that think about both efficacy and design. Yes, I have reviewed shapewear over the years, and yes, they were honest words and I continue to wear and enjoy the garments. But, there is always room for improvement!

I arrived at Danae’s one fine morning, dressed in a fetching pair of bright pink tights (underneath a dress), and she excitedly handed over my Mission Control shorts. We never tire of trying new underwear, so without further ado, I whipped off my dress and pulled the shorts over my pink, wool tights. As I was looking in the mirror trying to figure out whether I looked more like Madonna (I think it was the colours) or Lady Ga Ga (she’ll never get rid of being associated with pants as outwear), Danae piped up “You look like a superhero!” And she was right.

With my superhero pants on and dress zipped up, the mission was complete. The shorts come up way above belly button height, which is one of the reasons I love them so: They don’t slip or roll down because they have a strip of gummy stuff (a bit like hold ups) around the top; they are perfect to wear with low-slung jeans because they hold in that bit of tummy that loves to escape over the top of jeans; they smooth down the love-handles (aka muffin top); and they are darn comfy. They are great under dresses, even giving definition to my waist; they are fantastic for those days when the prospect of wearing anything but a tent is inconceivable, and if you fancy prancing around with a pair of heels on, they look amazing on!

I go through periods of time when shapewear is a must, in order for me not to feel and look like I’m about to pop out a 10lb baby; for this my waistnipper and pull-in pants combo has been a saviour. However I long for days when I can just ‘put on a pair of pants and go’, and this is exactly what I can do with my Mission Control pair. They don’t cut into my tummy, they don’t roll down, they firmly pull in the wobbly bits, and they make me look like superhero when I wear them over pink, wool tights – I can’t fault them and I want a pair for every day of the week!

I admit, I’m a touch cynical when it comes to products that try to lure me with their luxurious-sounding names; though it pains me, I feel I need to admit that I felt the same about Flexees ‘Decadence’ range. Luckily I couldn’t have been more wrong! As soon as I clapped eyes on a pair of latte (with Ivory) boyshorts I was hooked: at that point I actually didn’t care whether they were going to fit or the promises they may have been making, I just loved the look and feel of them.

Once I had fallen for the look of the Decadence knickers, there was however the new knicker dilemma; I wanted to try them but I could be risking disappointment: they might be too small (trying on a pair of I-really-want-you-but-I-don’t-think-you’ll-fit knickers can be soul destroying) or heaven forbid, too uncomfortable. I decided to confront my fears full on and wear them on a night out! An hour into the evening I mentioned that although I hadn’t been wearing them for long, I was impressed with my new knickers (I like to verbalise my thoughts); by the end of the evening I was practically prancing around Lady Ga Ga-style I was so happy with them.

What I love, nae adore, about the shorts is they look amazing on, and believe me I don’t often admit to these things. All importantly they come up over the tummy and smooth down the lumpy bits, enough to make me feel happy to wear a skimming dress. I also love wearing them with jeans as they hold in the bits that normally like to escape left, right and centre, and they are unbelievable comfortable. This range is not full-on, armour-style shapewear, but it does gently pull in and smooth.

There’s no more to say, other than: if I could only take three things to a desert island, I would take a pair of these in each colour. Oh, and Decadence? Yes, really!

More Decadence

The Decadence range also includes an underwire and wire-free bra: although the sizing meant I couldn’t find a bra to fit me, Danae and I are both in agreement that the One Fab Fit Decadence bra is well worth a try if you are an A-D cup. I dearly hope Flexees decide to increase their bra sizing or add a camisole to their Decadence collection – I for one would be there with more than a few bells on!

After reading the Lingerie Addict’s post about 12 wonderful robes, it dawned on me that I OWNED a couple (ok, several) of the robes she mentions, so it seems I have a subsection of my lingerie addition – Robes/Dressing gowns. They can be cozy or glamorous and they drape beautifully, while hiding any *perceived* flaws.

So as I lounge here in my aubergine La Perla Pj’s, here are a few of my favorite robes with a bit of a review!

Woolrich Berber Robe – This one was not on her list but in needs mentioning as it was seriously 16 Below Zero!  When I saw this robe reviewed on another site I fell in love with it, if not with the $150 price tag, so I kept an eye out for it and it I found it!  I was very wary of the material but it is very warm, cozy and not scratchy at all and if you can find it for 60% off  and you need something when you’re to curl up by the fire, you will not be disappointed.

Cocoon by Randi Kristoffersen Quilted Silk Robe – I’ve lusted after a Cocoon Robe for sometime but knowing it was sold at places like Neiman Marcus, Nancy Meyer, Harrods and so on, only comes in approximately 12 universally flattering proprietary colors and uses haute couture methods of tailoring with limited production and prices that start at $400 made this seem way out of reach.  So imagine my surprise when by chance I saw my quilted pale green robe NWT’s on ebay (I estimated the rrp. conservatively at $800) I knew I had to bid and I got it for 85% off.  The robe is heavenly and fits beautifully… I could get use to this.  Sadly, I’m seeing less and less of her work in the US but I was able to find some of the cotton pieces at Bedroom I’s for 25% off, with prices starting at $233.

Madame V’s Ostrich Feather Dressing Gown – I think Mme. Frou Frou post on fabulous feathers will give you an idea about how wonderful this piece is.   I love this robe!  It’s the very height of Drama Queen, even my New Year resolution was to re-decorated my office around this robe.  The Madame V robe retailed for $800 (I see a trend) I got a fantastic deal at over 70% off and now it’s sold out, but fear not, Faire Frou Frou has the D’lish Ostrich Feather Robe for only $270 for the same dramatic effect.

Agent Provocateur Fifi Short Robe – I love this short, sassy, sheer robe from Agent P.  It’s black and trimmed in carmel marabou feather for a very 50′s sex kitten feel (I know more feathers).  It’s brilliant with hi-waist knickers and cat eye glasses and at 75% off it was mine.  Again (as with most sales) these pieces tend sell out and/or are discontinued and though the AP sale is over you can still find wonderful pieces on ebay or wait for their next Semi- Annual Sale in about six months.  (Be a bit wary of AP on ebay as most of the sellers bought during the sale, then raised the prices).

Sexy Panties And Naughty Knickers Quilted Silk Dressing Gown -What is not to adore about 1940′s Hollywood glamour styled robes and when you can save 75% off, even more so.  Where the Cocoon robe is subtle the S***K robe, in hot pink, demands attention.  It’s a longer piece requiring me to wear silk pajamas and my vintage black satin French mules with the fur pom poms and possibly holding a martini while watching a William Powell/Myrna Loy movie.  The best part is you can still get this robe -I want it in blue too, (albeit a bit trickier if you are in North America) for only £30/$45 (rrp £152/$229).

After hearing how Danae got on with her Waistnipper under her wedding dress, I was keen to try the Flexees Waistnipper to see how it would fare wearing it under everyday wear…

The Verdict : Comfortable for all day wear, and great for smoothing, support and defining the waist.

Shapewear has become a slight obsession over the last wee while and having tried and been impressed with the Flexees Onesie I couldn’t wait to try the Waistnipper!

Without a hint of exaggeration I had that nipper on as soon as it came out of its wrapper – all (scratchy) labels still attached. I haven’t been that excited about a product for quite some time, and luckily it didn’t let me down. As soon as I got it on (which was a heck of a lot easier than I thought, given the amount of hooks and eyes) I gazed at my newly-transformed torso – it was truly amazing – I had a proper waist, I was smoothed, and the all important thing: my tummy was a good few inches flatter. I wore the nipper that same evening to a lovely event at Boudiche in Edinburgh, where I couldn’t resist showing it to one of the girls – who shared my enthusiasm.

I’m delighted and at the same time a little ashamed to say I have worn the nipper ever since – if I thought there was any point, other than loving it so much, I would wear it in bed as well. I’ve worn it under dresses and with jeans and I’m now more comfortable with it on than off – it just feels right. It hasn’t eliminated the protruding tummy problem completely, but unless a couple of whales felt like sacrificing themselves and their bones for me, I don’t think my tummy will ever be flat.

I love Flexees Firm Control Long Torso Waistnipper, to give it its full name; I love it because of its comfort, design and its incredibly reasonable price. I now have my eye on the Luleh Retro Chic Waistnipper – partly because the name’s drawing me to it, but mainly because now I’ve had a taste of a Flexees waistnipper, I don’t think I’ll be able to get by without them!

Alison and I have reviewed Flexees shapewear products in the past, but I’ve been holding off on writing about two shapewear pieces because I was saving them for the ultimate test: my wedding. Here’s how I got on with the Flexees waistnipper and thigh shaping shorts:

Flexees Waistnipper

The Verdict: great support and comfortable, but not great if you’re wearing it for extended periods.

The Flexees waistnipper is like an old-fashioned girdle — it is (plastic) boned for extra support, closes in the front (or back) with hooks, and extends from under the bust to the top of your hips. It looks a lot like an underbust corset, but it feels completely different — whereas you are laced into a corset, the Flexees moulds around you and offers a much softer, pliable support level. You can bend over, jump around, and generally move about quite comfortably in the Flexees, although it does take about five minutes to get used to wearing it!

Despite how comfortable it is to wear, the waistnipper boasts some excellent results: it not only holds you in, but in my experience shaved a little over half an inch off of my waistline. My dressmaker also loved it, because unlike a corset, it always closes to the exact same tightness, which meant that she measure around it without having to worry about the measurements changing on the big day!

The only downside to the waistnipper is comfort over time — after about three hours of wearing it, the top of the waistnipper started to dig in to my torso, and I ended up taking it off (luckily, the dress still fit!). I think the flexibility that’s so nice when you first put it on is also the cause of the waistnipper’s problem — it got twisted around from all the moving around, and just started to pinch in all the wrong places.

Even with the longevity problem, I still think the waistnipper is worth looking into, especially if you don’t like the idea of a full-control corset. I have worn the waistnipper on a few occasions now, and while it’s not a perfect shapewear device, it does do the trick when I need some instant slimming!

The Verdict: these shorts are wonderful – highly recommended, especially for any woman struggling with chaffing thighs!

Unlike the waistnipper, I have absolutely zero reservations in recommending these shorts — they have made such a big difference in my life that I wish I had a pair for each day of the week!

What’s so special about them? In short, they have finally cured my eternal problem of “chub rub”. For those who don’t know the phrase, “chub rub” is when the tops of your thighs rub together when you walk, leading to a lot of discomfort, irritated skin and for sufferers like me, a life doomed to wearing no skirts or dresses. It can happen to women of any size and shape, but is especially a problem for plus-size women like myself.

These shorts, however, are the perfect chub-rub solution — they are comfortable, supportive, and act as a silky-smooth cushion between your legs. The top of the shorts extend to just under your bust and hold in your tummy very well, but they don’t roll down like a lot of other brands I’ve tried. They kept me comfortable on my wedding day, and they’re also very good in hot weather – I wore these shorts all through my honeymoon in South Carolina, and they never overheated me, not even in the swamps!

It is so liberating to be able to wear dresses and skirts whenever I want; my only warning is that if you have similar problems, watch out! Once you get these Flexees, you’ll end up spending a fortune on clothes you never thought you could wear!

Recently we posted about some great lingerie sales from Made by Niki, Sexy Panties & Naughty Knickers and the Elizabeth Cotton Kaftan from Neiman Marcus and my recent TJ Maxx outings and again I must say I’m quite pleased with the service, shipping speed and most of all the products themselves.  I’m seriously thinking of picking up another S***K dressing gown (Turquoise) and a couple more Fresh Foundation pieces in satin while they are still on sale .

Elizabeth Cotton Kaftan

I had been interested in trying Elizabeth Cotton from the moment I read Danae’s glowing review and they did not disappoint.   So when I saw the line on sale at Neiman Marcus I knew that was my chance. The Elizabeth Cotton site states she was looking for something she could wear in front of her future in-laws and not feel stodgy but  I think the material is a bit too thin to go commando.  With that said the 240 thread count, finely woven cotton is crisp allowing my caftan to retain it’s smart lines, it’s fade resistant and was perfect for warm summer evenings.  Neiman Marcus still has the pj’s available but sizes are limited and the sale price is now $86 instead of $65.

Sexy Panties and Naughty Knickers

The Knickers Girls are big fans of Sexy Panties and Naughty Knickers and though we are sad they had to change their logo, which is embroidered on each piece of lingerie, the 80% off  or more sale was thrilling!  I had purchased a couple of things from S***K before so I knew the quality; also I just love the companies overall mission as well as the little silver Live, Love, Laugh charm that come with each piece, so the chance of being disappointed was slim.  I decided to go for the oh so 40′s glam of the hot pink, silk, quilted robe for £30 (was £155).  The color was eye popping and the style tailored yet cozy, when I wear it I want bon bons and champagne, powder puffs and satin slippers.  Currently this dressing gown is their monthly special and is still only £30, sadly it’s of the old stock, therefore cannot be shipped to North America.

Made by Niki Fresh Foundations

The first time I saw Made by Niki Fresh Foundations range it was on the cover of  Intimate Apparel Business magazine and it took my breath away, I was not alone!  This drop dead gorgeous satin shapewear (available in black and champagne) took the market by storm, I saw it everywhere from small online retailers like Pampered Passions to high end boutiques like Journelle to the big players like Figleaves. Like my fellow bargain shoppers (the sharkettes) I want to know immediately when/if it ever went on sale.  It did and I was able to pick up the sheer suspender skirt and matching knickers in Lilac.  The sheer is for light to moderate shaping, so don’t expect miracles, but the design is fun and the knickers are a wonderful soft mesh that feel great on and the price £39 for both pieces (rrp. £168) was divine.

TJ Maxx Final Clearance Sale

In last Friday’s post I mentioned TJ Maxx/Marshall’s Final Clearance Sale.  I hope you have one or both of these stores locally.  I was fortunate enough while in Denver,  visiting the SOL Sale, to stop by TJ Maxx with a Runway Department and wow did I pick up some fabulous sleepwear perfect for Fall.  My haul included a Hanro Pure Affair Gown for $20 (rrp. $150), Cosabella Robe -so soft, perfect fit (92% rayon, 8% elastane) for $15 (rrp. $150) and Helmut Lang boyshorts for $10 (rrp.$70).   Then locally, I hit Marshalls and picked up swimsuits from La Blanca and Gottex for $3 each, among other things.

All in all this was yet another successful bargain shop!

I’m back from Denver and happy to report the SoL Lingerie Sale was fabulous, extremely popular and part of the Cherry Creek North 39th Annual Sidewalk Sale.  By the time I got there (Saturday afternoon) all knickers (except HankyPanky) were $16 and you got an extra 35% off, which was fantastic.  With the help of the lovely Kendall I also picked up the Lejaby Hot Couture plunge bra for only $65 (reg $130) -the fit surprisingly great and the DH adores it.   Sadly, I couldn’t find the matching knickers, but I made up for it by picking up these ( Lejaby’s Follement Sage, Lise Charmel’s Lilas Charm and Ravage’ Heritier) for a grand total of $33 (rrp. $305).

Like last year the lingerie bins (sorted by size) were loaded with designers like Marie Jo, Prima Donna, Lejaby, Ravage, Lise Charmel, Andres Sarda and this year, as an added bonus, they included rack of swimwear and loungewear.   If there was a downside to this wonderful sale it’s that I got there too late so the selection wasn’t as great and I wasn’t able to make it to Sunday’s wild card sale -they don’t open until noon on Sundays (darn that long drive back home).

Which sale was better March or July?  It’s impossible to say.  This year I had the chance to meet the wonderful Janelle Kenny and catch up a bit with Jade.  I also got to treated great customer service, beautiful weather and all of the sales during the Cherry Creek event, so despite not putting a major dent in my wallet, I had a truly an awesome time.  If you are in Dever or plan a visit, do yourself a favor and stop by: 248 Detroit St., Denver, CO. Katies bargains continue to amaze us – here’s what she thinks of her latest sunwear acquisitions!

Through a series of events I realized I would be planning a staycation in the mid-west this summer instead of a beach vacation; fortunately, the pieces I purchased would easily adapt to my new plans.   I recently posted about the Seaton Surf Outlet Sale, Calida of Switerland, Surfmonk and the Gravis shoe sale and I must say I’m quite pleased with the service, shipping speed and most of all the products themselves.

Surf Seaton Hats

Whether I’m in the mid-west or on the west coast sun is an issue, so when I saw the luxe surfwear from Seaton (an L.A. favorite) at up to 90% off, I was off and running!  I managed to pick-up the paisly aqua and the white chain print hat ($5 each, reg. $69 each) and a lightweight cotton hoodie for $25 (reg. $138).  The hats are super cute and so sturdy I can wear them in the water.  The hoodie with shorts and a tank top in the evening have the perfect staycation casual, instead of “I’m bumming around the house in a sweatshirt” feel.  I really wish I’d  bought two, alas only the XSml & Sml size hoodies are available now.

Calilda of Switzerland

A good lightweight cotton gown is in order for warm humid night which lead me to buy and try out the Calida pajama shirt for $8  (reg. $98).  I really wish I had ordered two of these, especially now that the sales price has jumped back up to $32.  I like the tuxedo-style button front and silky-soft cotton material – again it takes hanging out at home to the next level when you’re wearing nice pjs!

Surfmonk Robe

The Surfmonk Classic Robe for $75 (reg. $225) was everything I thought it would be (please note: if you are short, like I am, you will need to have it hemmed).  It’s so cozy soft and it covers me from head to toe, keeping the chill and the mozzies away.  If it’s still available at Shopintution run, don’t walk, and pick one up – even at ‘just’ 60% off  I’m thinking of picking up another one as a spare!

Gravis Shoes

The Sierra Snowboard’s Gravis shoe sale was great; flipflops for $3 (reg. $15) and the slip-on from $5 to $12 ($35 – $55) are outstanding and looked great with the Seaton hoodie.  The leather flipflops preform brilliantly even after they get wet, the leather slip-ons not so much, but at only $5 and having not actually stated they were water shoes, soaking them was probably not my best idea!  Please note: I researched Gravis before buying them and found they run about a half size small, so keep that in mind, especially if you’re buying without trying.

All in all this was yet another successful bargain shop!

I’ve loved Melissa Odabash for some time, so I was thrilled by the Shopbop Sale.  I managed to bag myself an amazing 70% off the Zebra Pareo, and if that wasn’t enough, an extra 20% with a promotion code and free shipping – what is there not to love!  The color (retro brown) works with most solid color tops and the heaviness of the fabric ensured my legs wouldn’t be bothered by any pesky mozzies. If there is a downside it’s that it sold out, so I hope you got yours!

Another Grade A bargain!

Rescue Beauty Lounge

Summer sun, pool chorine and bug repellent spray can wreak havoc with my skin, so I’m always interested in bath & body products that will keep dry skin at bay.  I’d only heard of Rescue Beauty Lounge nail lacquer (dazzling colors and matching price $18) and posh salons; since even the new line’s label was designed by Sara Rotman, I knew it was the pedigree I was hoping for.  Due to its fine grains the exfoliating body wash didn’t quite work for me as an exfoliant, but it’s delightful for a bubble bath!  The hand cream was lovely:  rich (RBL knows hands), but not greasy, it quickly absorbs into skin and all of the products smell great, with Wild Rosemary Pamplemousse being my all time fave!

I’m a big fan of GreenKnickers; I love everything about them: from their earth friendly practices and unbelievably reasonable prices, to the cheeky sayings like  Eat Organic embroidered on the front.  I also love the silk/hemp side-tie knickers and in fact I own several pairs – I love them for comfort, quality of fabric and sheer fun girlyness!

The shantung- like fabric has a slight shine with good heft, modest cut and a great fit.  I love the recycled gift boxes that come complimentary with every order, which definitely beats getting your goods in a plastic bag!

My only regret  is that Green Knickers don’t make these in briefs in the style of their Lucky Wedding Knickers (which are 50% off until the end of August), if they did I would wear them all the time!  As it stands I wear them only for lounging as they tend to produce bulging at the hip under clothes.  But that’s ok because the point of the tie sides is that they’re are meant to be seen, and as far as I’m concerned, they’re as adorable as they are comfortable!

As our bargain’s editor Katie has had problems finding a well-fitting shirt for her full busted figure, she was intrigued by Bratique Helene’s promise of a well-fitting shirt that not only fits the bust line, it also flatters the waistline. Here’s her verdict:

Carissa Rose Collection

I am really loving the Carissa shirt from Carissa Rose! It’s been a long time since I wore a shirt that fit; so long in fact that for the first hour I couldn’t stop tugging at it, even though it was completely unnecessary – and this is what makes Carissa Rose Clothing so fantastic!

I have little patience for gimmick cleavage ‘hiders’ but until now they beat wearing the dreaded minimizer bra.  Now with the Carissa shirt I don’t need  any gimmicks: it’s light weight and has a  classic design that I can wear with jeans or dress up for an evening out, and the hooK and eye closures are a brilliant way to achieve the fitted look.  I don’t feel like I’m falling out of my top or need to go with an XL top, and when you are a 34G/H that is saying a lot.  I also love their sizing chart  (SW – Small Well Endowed, SR – Small Really Endowed, MW, MR, LW, LR and so on) it really does make me feel my curves are a blessing; and just so you know I wear a Medium (yea!) Really Endowed.

The only down side is the limited selection of styles available: there are only 4 shirt designs and 1 dress, and they only come in solid colors (Black, White, French Blue, Baby Pink and Khaki for shirts and Navy and Candy Pink for the dresses).  But, with such a great fit, it’s a great start; the shirts are easy to work into any wardrobe, and Carissa Rose has plans to expand the range!

It’s not that we’re looking for utter perfection, but faced with the prospect of wearing a tight top or dress, and craving a smooth silhouette, we’re always on the look out for shapewear that will give us a helping hand. Since Danae and I have different shapes – Danae a UK size 16 and a G cup, me a UK size 12 and a DD-E cup – we may have different ‘problem’ areas, but we have one thing in common: whatever the shapewear, we want it to be comfortable and we want it to work!

I am crazy about my Onesie. When I pulled it out of the packaging I laughed at the ridiculousness of it, but once I got it on I was a converted woman! It really does give great control and shape – Alison can attest that I kept running from the closet to the mirror trying on “unforgiving” dresses and shouting, “Look, look, I’m hot!” I couldn’t believe the difference it made on my slinkiest little black dress – I felt totally confident wearing it for the first time.

It’s not just the control – this onesie is really comfortable, and the fabric is both soft and surprisingly thin and flexible. I’ve worn that same slinky dress with a Spanx and the night didn’t end well — I had to go to the loo halfway through the party, wriggle out of the Spanx and stuff it into my tiny handbag, because the tummy kept rolling down and the thighs kept rolling up. By contrast, I wore the onesie for a night out recently and had absolutely no issues – i ate dinner and had a great time and didn’t think about the shapewear. It’s a little hilarious to pee (my tip — go commando and put knickers on over the onesie if you’re feeling naked) but there is an opening and it can be done!

The only problem I had with the Onesie was with the shoulder straps — I don’t think the bust portion of the onesie was designed for my G-cups, and so the fit was a little awkward and the straps dug in a little bit. This isn’t going to stop me from wearing it again, though – overall it’s a fabulous secret weapon under my little black dress!

Alison’s Review:

I’m naively optimistic about shapewear; I’m always drawn in by the thought that miraculously my tummy and accompanying love-handles (aka muffin top) will disappear once I’ve squeezed myself into a sausage-skin-type garment that claims to transform my appearance – and without fail I am disappointed time and time again. With a history dating back to the 1920′s Maidenform have a heap of experience behind them, so I felt that my optimism this time at least had some proper firm and justified legs.

No matter how many times I try on shapewear it always makes me chuckle to think that under an oh-so-pretty dress lies an oh-so-ugly garment – especially when it comes in nude, or beige, as the Onesie colour is called. I know the colour shouldn’t make a difference but it does to me, so I was amazed at how non-ugly Maidenform’s beige was! As soon as I received the Onesie I put it on under a pair of skinny jeans and a slim-fitting top – the result was impressive: I didn’t feel like I was squeezed into a surgical bandage and when my top exposed a section of lower back (this always happens for some reason) I didn’t hear screams of ‘what are you wearing?!’ from my friends. The colour of the garment is that convincing!

As I mentioned above, my problem area is my tummy and love-handles, and minus shapewear the resulting silhouette not a pretty sight. The Onesie came along like the proverbial knight in shining armour, except this one stuck around and didn’t disappoint. True, my tummy wasn’t as flat as a pancake (for this I would need steel) but I was smoothed, pulled in and there were no spare tyres visible – all this and I could still breathe!

I adore the Onesie and although I think the ‘bra’ part, designed to sit over your own bra (making it suitable for a much wider range of cup sizes), could perhaps be a little more generous, this is never the less an ingenious design. The silky fabric means you can wear the Onesie under pratically anything, and its non-constricting pulling-in power means you can eat a meal and survive. Maidenform might not have super-snazzy packaging or in-your-face branding but their products are well made and most importantly: live up to their claims.

We also tried Flexees Thigh Slimmer by Maidenform (above left) – £22 from Figleaves UK and $28 from Maidenform US , our verdict: Fantastic light control for thighs and tummy!

Our top tip for buying shapewear

Always buy shapewear in your true size, and never think that buying one size smaller will pull you in more – it will only result in an ill-fitting, uncomfortable garment!

A pair of French Knickers is surely de rigeur in every serious lingerie drawer: traditional and sexy, the highly sought after, classically-made knicker is often hard to find, as Josephine designer of Simply French Knickers realised after a fruitless search.

Simply French Knickers – Josette

I’m a sucker for most lingerie, and have a beautifully eclectic collection to show for it; when it comes down to it though, I adore vintage-inspired, simple, traditional styles. These French Knickers really are simple: a classical pattern is used thoroughout the collection, with a few cute, heart-shaped buttons here, a bit of lace there – and a selection of beautiful colours.

Upon arrival of the knickers I opened the package and found the much-anticipated, sparkly, organza envelope in which the knickers are sent (I still use my envelope to store mine in). The Josette Knickers were exactly what I expected: lovely silk, delicate cotton lace, and so traditional it was like one of spectacular vintage finds you’ve always dreamed of.

Simply French Knickers – The Collection

Genereously cut, my Knickers are a UK size 12 (which is what I am) and as I generally buy one size up when it comes to knickers, I was very happy to find the sizing true to its description. Thinking I could only wear these under a dress for fear of VPL, it was another pleasant surprise when I pulled on a pair of snug-fitting jeans and found I could show my jeans-clad derriere without looking like I had tucked my dressing gown down the back. As the Knickers have a delicately elasticated waistband, they are very comfortable; they’re not designed to be worn with low-waisted jeans (i.e the type that require a flat stomach) but if you do insist on this combination, expect a similar look to when you’re wearing your partner’s boxers.

Overall I love the silky knickers, and wish with all my heart that I loved ironing as much, because in order to keep them looking like they should, you do need to give them the respect they deserve: handwash, iron on a cool setting and store in a suitable (sparkly) bag. Well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

Unfortunately proper bra fitting still seems to be a mystery to some retailers: Some insist on using a tape measure, some can do it by just looking and some just don’t bother. Although it has got better, incredibly we still experience bad bra-fitting, so when the opportunity arose for me to attend the Mya Blue One Day Bra Fitting course I was, needless to say, delighted – not only would I be able to fit others, I would be able to fit myself, without the help (or hindrance) of someone else.

Off to Bra School!

Happy in the knowledge that I would soon be a qualified bra-fitter, I flew off to sunny Leicester where Lindsey Brown holds the course. I admit, I was a trifle nervous: would I need to call upon my Anatomy&Physiology course I did as a trainee dance teacher, and how would I feel if I failed the course? I’m glad to say I needn’t have worried: the course was relaxed and doesn’t have a ‘fail/pass’ test (though Lindsey does make sure everyone is suitable to be let loose on the public), and because there were only six of us (the perfect size according to Lindsey), it was personal and we were able to ask questions when we felt the need.

With a Degree in Fashion and a Masters Degree in Contour Design, Lindsey is qualified in all areas of not only how a bra should fit, but is also able to provide insightful information about how a bra should be made and, very importantly, about breast anatomy; we all agreed, all of these components are imperative if you are going to fit bras as it provides a deeper understanding to why our boobs behave in a certain way, and of course how bras should fit. We were given a run-down on what we should look for in a well-made bra and how bras (are supposed to) support us – and yes, there were some great examples of good and bad; labels which here shall remain nameless, but really, shame on you!

Fitting Practice and Verdict

After a morning of theory, and a beautiful lunch at a fine Italian restaurant, it was time for our final task – actual bra-fitting! We were let loose (armed with clipboards) on three lovely and very patient models: to have the opportunity to practice on live models is invaluable; as the three ladies were different ages and sizes it made the whole experience so much more realistic in terms of fitting and learning how to deal with customers, whatever their age and cup size. The Mya Blue method of fitting is not to use a tape measure and instead to use your eye as well as your learned ability to asses a lady’s size; not so bizarrely, this is a far more accurate and sensible way of sizing compared to the measuring method – not least because a tape measure can’t take into consideration age or shape.

The Verdict
I can safely report that this is a great course and I would highly recommend it: not only did I come away safe in the knowledge that I would now be able to bra-fit ‘legitimately’, I also had a wonderful and very insightful day learning at Mya Blue with the other ladies who attended. We unanimously agreed, Lindsey Brown’s bra-fitting course should surely be a legal obligation for all those who are thinking of going into the lingerie industry; whether it’s retail, design or even blogging about lingerie, you need to know the facts – after all, if women are going to spend money on a bra, surely they have a right to buy one that actually fits!

The Mya Blue One Day Bra-fitting course in Leicester (UK) costs £200 + VAT and includes refreshments and lunch. Courses resume in January and places are limited to eight for each course, so check the Mya Blue website regularly for dates and availability for upcoming courses.

My DH and I just got back from 6 days and 3 hotels in Cabo San Lucas.  We needed fishing clothes, dinnerwear, beach gear, casualwear as well as the usual bits and pieces to fit in our large Timberland pack, and I can tell you this, it was great to be able to instantly put your hands on a clean pair of underwear, without the aggravation of digging through a well-packed bag! The fit was great, they’re washable, great quality (made of 95% cotton and 5% elastane), comfortable and eco-friendly, which was a concern, because I was under the impression that they were disposable – the thongs all have printed washing instructions on them and their website states:hand wash for best result. They wash great and dry quickly, leaving you with a clean pair and a clear conscience!

Could you do the same with thongs you already own or use the actual bio degradable paper thongs?  That depends.  A certain brand makes an anti-bacterial thong for about $25 a pair, Flingz are $18 for a 3 pack and are packed for you.  As for the paper disposable thong…Yikes!  I’ve tried them and I can’t think of a single good thing to say, since bunchy, uncomfortable and ugly don’t qualify!

The Verdict:
These are best suited for women who need a change of clothes away from home, like going to the gym or your modeling assignment; they’re great whether you are at home or traveling. Just remember your mother’s warning about always having clean underwear with you..

We don’t often stray from our obsessive coverage of luxury lingerie, but when Katie met the dress label Stop Staring! at a lingerie show, we knew we had to make an exception.

These dresses are made for the kind of women who love gorgeous lingerie – a quick peek through Stop Staring’s catalogue shows a huge variety retro-inspired designs, a perfect companion to the ever-popular retro and burlesque trend dominating lingerie. When we got the opportunity to try Stop Staring’s dresses for ourselves, we jumped at the chance – if these dresses made the grade, they would be a great recommendation for our readers.

Dressing the Knickers girls isn’t as easy as it first seems — the three of us are all very different body shapes and sizes, and thanks to our obsession with lingerie, we’re also very discriminating about fabric and fit. For one label to make all three of us happy is a tall order – did Stop Staring pull it off? We’ll give the verdict, girl by girl:

Katie’s Review

The Stop Staring! shopping experience was fantastic. Eva and Alicia took all of our measurements and picked out the dress best suited for each of us. I got the perfect little Hollywood black dress ($98).

At first I was a bit disappointed because it was a bit plain and it was an XL (not my regular size), but I hadn’t tried it on. Eva is a GENIUS! This dress was perfect for me. I am short, 5’2″ and relatively slim but busty — a 34H to be exact, which is a very difficult shape to fit. The dress, however, is made from a completely curve-hugging bengaline stretch fabric, which means it fits in the bust (I’m not popping out) but it’s not big or loose in the waist and hips. Perfect!

As soon as I tried it on I knew I wanted another Stop Staring! dress, they are so cute and such a wonderful fit – even my husband completely and immediately agreed! If there was any downside, it’s that most of the dresses are made for taller people. I cannot wear any of the kick pleat dresses because they are too long and cannot be hemmed, so it does limit my selection. Still, the Park Avenue may be in my very near future!

Alison’s Review

It’s not often I send my measurements to someone and get a dress selected in my absence; I was intrigued by the thought of what I would be sent and whether it would suit both my size and personality. I’m happy to report that my fears were unfounded: if the girls at Stop Staring! had known me for ten years, they still couldn’t have chosen a better dress!

As I excitedly unwrapped my dress (Linda, $150), my initial reaction was: It’s gorgeous, but it’s never going to fit! The dress looked tiny, and as I have a strange ‘no waist’ figure, I had my doubts about whether it would even zip up. My doubts were soon dispersed as I stepped into the dress and was zipped up without any difficulty – the dress fit like it was made for me! Looking in the mirror I was astounded as a very different person stood opposite me: the usual slim girl who needs the occasional bit of help to enhance her 32DD bust was now an all over curvy, sexy woman – with a waist! The fabric smoothed and pulled in all those bits I like to have pulled in, so it made me feel sleek, slim and sexy; at no time did I feel uncomfortable or squeezed in, which left me wondering why all dresses aren’t made of this fabric!

I’m a big fan of retro-style fashion and I loved Stop Staring the moment I saw their designs. What I loved about my ‘Linda’ dress first and foremost is its chic, glamorous style: even if ‘retro’ isn’t your thing, it certainly wouldn’t put you off this dress; anyone who loves to look gorgeous, would love Linda!

The dusky pink satin top has a subtle slit in the bust area, which is incredibly sexy as it just shows a peek of cleavage without overdoing it. Although I don’t like to go over the top to show off my bust, I do like a little accentuation and the satin top stopped exactly where it should in order to maximise my figure. This is one dreamy dress, and I can’t wait to try out more of the aptly-named Stop Staring Collection!

Danae’s Review

Like Alison and Katie, I was a little wary about sending off my measurements to have a dress chosen by strangers, but Alicia and Eva did a magnificent job with my choice as well. I got a beautifully-embroidered black Paris dress ($126, black is part of the upcoming collection), which features a gorgeous sweetheart neckline and the same stretch bengaline fabric that Katie and Alison have been raving about.

I had no idea how gorgeous this dress was going to look until I had zipped it up — on the hanger it just looks like a dress, but on the body the fabric goes to work, hugging and stretching in all the right places, nipping in the waist and accentuating all of my curves. The neckline was a little loose for me, but I blame that on my 10k training – in the time between sending off my measurements and receiving the dress I managed to lose a bit of weight, so I probably could have managed an XL instead of the XXL my original measurements dictated. Even so, I agree with Katie’s assessment that these dresses are great for larger-cup sizes – I still wasn’t popping out anywhere on the dress, and it managed to look fitted at the waist while still allowing for a larger chest.

What really struck me about this dress was how much I wanted to wear it — because I so rarely find a dress that actually fits my shape and makes me feel attractive, I rarely wear them at all. With this dress, I was inventing reasons to go out so I could have another shot in my little black dress. I’ve already gone through the Stop Staring! catalogue to pick out another one, and the only thing stopping me from buying is that I have picked out about five dresses that I can’t decide between!

The Verdict

As you can see, all three of us are pretty crazy for Stop Staring! now. It’s very rare for a label to create a vintage-inspired look that’s also comfortable and wearable on a day-to-day basis, but these dresses really are. They have everything from evening wear to day dresses to ready-to-wear in their catalogue, and I think if the three of us could have our way, we’d buy one of each! We can’t recommend highly enough that you go check out their catalogue and find the perfect dress for yourself!

It’s review time again, and this time Alison tried a pair of Spanx Higher Power Panties when she was invited out to a dinner party. We know the likes of Oprah and Ms Paltrow wear them, but did they give Alison the celeb figure she was looking for (even after three courses)?

Comfort: Suffice to say: my Power Panties were a constant reminder not to eat more than is polite at a dinner party. Towards the end of the evening, as I was having a nightcap with friends back home, I felt a little like I did when the orthodontist tightened my braces.. they’re not so much uncomfortable as – not as comfortable as I wanted to be,but, they are like that for a reason! (and, just like the braces, I did sneak them off during a trip to the bathroom and hid them in the cupboard!)

Style: Power Panties are functional, they aren’t supposed to be pretty. They reminded me of my Great Aunt, so I kept in mind that retro is in at the moment.

Fit: They fit like a wetsuit: no gaps, no wrinkles, just pure smoothness! I would definitely recommend using the sizing guide; my mum tried to try mine on and nearly hit her head off the sink when they got stuck somewhere between her knees and her thighs and she lost balance! Buying Spanx, lesson number 1: don’t buy too small.
My Spanx are a medium and I’m around a UK size 10-12.

Functionability: They do exactly what they say on the packet: they smoothed, they held in my tummy, and, they didn’t fall down! (Oh, and they have a little opening for “when nature calls”, but I decided not to try it out)

Verdict: Spanx are brilliant, and I now want to try out their other products! They might feel a bit like your wearing a corset, but they just need a little getting used to. If you want a flatter stomach, and a smoother silhouette for a night out, get a pair – just be prepared to eat smaller portions if you go to a dinner party.

Dedicated to ethical sourcing, and eco awareness, Texere Silk design silk loungewear with a difference; using lead-free dyes, they hand paint and hand dye their garments, providing beautiful, ‘guilt-free’ loungewear for us to enjoy! This week we had the pleasure of trying out a silk kimono and a chemise set from Texere Silk; did they feel as lovely as they looked, and how did they fit? Here’s what we thought:

Comfort:
The silk in this robe is just heavy enough to keep you warm, and thin enough to feel weightless on your skin. It’s beautifully soft and the robe is so slinky that it will slide off my sheets if I toss it too carelessly. I absolutely love slipping it on in the evenings – the belt is long enough to be comfortably knotted, and I can wrap it around me enough to stay comfortable around the house.

Style:
I was initially a little worried by the bold print on the robe, but completely forgot about the print once I put it on. The cut is flattering at the neckline and really suits curvier figures like mine, and the side slits are stylish without going over the top with sex appeal. I love the slightly belled sleeves, which are just long enough to look good without dipping into your cereal in the morning.

Fit:
The robe is a one-size, and I worried that it wouldn’t fit me as an XL – luckily, it fits beautifully. If you’re an XL size and prefer a lot of coverage at the front i would suggest going with one of Texere’s size-specific pieces, but the one-size hasn’t troubled me at all and looks great. For smaller sizes, the robe shouldn’t swallow you, although very small sizes should probably also look for more size-specific offerings.

Spring Bouquet Chemise Set

Comfort:
The chemise was lovely to sleep in; its weightless silkiness just right to make me feel like I was encased in luxury but didn’t wake up with it twisted about my body, the way some silk chemises do! The robe kept me surprisingly warm while lounging around on a Sunday morning, and was a joy to wear.

Style: I love the length of this chemise; it’s short enough to feel flirty and goes perfectly with the longer length of the robe to create an elegantly glamorous ensemble. The design on the front of the chemise is really beautiful, with gorgeous, opulent colours; the same print is skilfully carried over on to the lapels and cuffs of the robe, which I loved, as it provided just enough design to show the garments belonged to each other without being overbearing.

Fit:
The sizing is joyfully generous! My set is a size Medium (I’m a UK size 10-12 and a 32DD), and the chemise gaped a little at the sides, meaning if you’re small sized with bigger girls, they’ll still fit in! The adjustable straps are great, as I could choose how low I wanted the chemise to sit; the robe fits perfectly, with enough room for expansion should it ever be needed!

A few weeks ago we told you about Bebaroque legwear made not far away from Knickers HQ. Alison decided she would try out her Bebaroque ‘Tattoo Me’ tights when she and Danae were in Paris. During a night out, they lost count of the number of people looking at the tattooed legwear and, astonishingly, a car even stopped on the busy Rue de la Bastille to ask about the tights! They obviously created a stir on the streets of Paris, but did Alison like wearing them? Here’s her verdict:

I was amazed by the fit of the tights! As I have a 34in inside leg, finding tights that fit properly is a challenge. I never buy ‘one size’ tights as they are always too short and I end up with a crotch near
my knees. I was delighted (after my initial scepticism) to find that these ‘one size’ beauties fit perfectly!

VTL: 5/5
Visible Tight Line is a not-very-often highlighted problem. It’s something however that plagues me time and time again. Unless you have no body fat, the waistband so often cuts in at the stomach (giving a very unwelcome bulge)
and creates an ugly line that makes you have to change your dress moments before you go out (for some reason VTL only becomes apparent to me during that last look in the mirror before I go out). I was overjoyed by the lack of VTL and even enjoyed a Parisian meal without feeling like I had an elastic band around my waist.

Tattoo Me tights are definite head-turners. With their silky sheer appearance they’re not only elegant but downright sexy! I’m not usually a fan of light-coloured, sheer tights but, together with the exquisitely designed, quirky print these are really stunning. I could walk the streets of Paris safe in the knowledge that I fit in with the Parisian chiconistas!

I’ve never been one to skimp on quality and therefore always expect to pay a little more. Though I’ve never paid £35 for a pair of tights before, I’ve also never had a pair of tights quite like this.
Bebaroque tights are hand printed, fit brilliantly and are of amazing quality, and I think they’re definitely worth splashing out on.

I have to admit to having had a bit of stage fright before I went out in the tights (I can still hear Danae’s words of reassurance and then frustration!). I’m so used to wearing thick, opaque tights, that it felt a little strange walking around in ‘bare’, ‘tattooed’ legs, however my confidence grew when I realised how good they made me feel. I’m now trying to limit my time gazing at the rest of the Bebaroque legwear collection!

We’ve always loved Marlies Dekkers bold designs here at Knickers . Marlies has gone from strength to strength, winning both Veuve Clicquot’s business woman of the year 2007 award and the prestigious CILA award.
The uniquely designed ‘Shibari‘ set certainly looks good, but what was Alison’s verdict on the comfort and fit?

This is one of the softest and most beautifully made bras I’ve come across for a long time. The under wiring ‘concealed’ within well-made seams prevents the all-too common red marks often left even by the best made bras. The equally comfortable thong is generously cut and high enough to prevent tummy spillage.

Support: 5/5
The jiggle test was carried out (essential with all new bras) and the bra stood up to it. Both the band and the straps are wide and sturdy and great for keeping everything in its rightful place. The straps are adjustable at the front, which is brilliant, as you can adjust them without having to contort yourself.

Fit: 5/5
As a 32D girl (and a bit lop-sided) I never feel like I’m big busted, but finding a good fit is still difficult. This bra however is a seriously good fit and gave me no unwanted bulges (which often happens when one side is bigger than the other). The wide band, straps and good under wiring help enormously with the fit without looking like scaffolding.

VPL: 5/5
The very nature of a thong is that there shouldn’t be a VPL and…there wasn’t!

Elegant, sexy and empowering are the words that spring to mind when wearing this set. Marlies Dekkers distinct ‘strappy’ design really does look gorgeous and not a bow or frilly bit in sight! This set looks fantastic on, and made me feel like a strong, elegant woman. Seriously stylish under a crisp white shirt for the office and stylishly sexy with the strappy bits peeking out from under a low-cut top.

Value for Money: 5/5
Given the unique design together with great fit, style and comfort, this is a pretty good price. I’m certainly prepared to pay a little extra when I find a good bra that is not a run-of-the-mill lacy creation, so I really think this is worth every penny.

Much as I adore silk, frills and bows, this is such a welcome change from the sets I already possess in my ever-increasing lingerie drawer. The elegance of this set coupled with a bit of naughtiness ( Shibari is a type of Japanese bondage no less!) has certainly been a big hit with me.

We told you earlier this year about Vanjo, a promising new larger-cup label with a laid-back, sunny style. The designs look great but for larger cup sizes, the real test is in the fit — does the Vanjo bra combine a great style with great support? Alison has the verdict:

I’m a ‘don’t want to feel like I’ve got a bra on’ type of girl, and the Vanjo balconette bra definitely lived up to my expectations, as did the briefs. The smooth satin material makes it perfect for everyday wear, as there is no danger of scratchy lace. The sturdy-yet-chic straps finished off with a tiny, deep pink-coloured bow will be a hit with the larger bosomed ladies, who don’t want their straps digging in.

The support surprised me! I carried out the essential jiggle test and… no movement! The material makes sure that there is very little give in the cup which I loved. It has a wide band and triple hook and eye to fasten it which, given that it goes up to an F cup, is a great asset. As mentioned above, the sturdy straps give extra support so the girls won’t be let down.

Fit: 5/5
The sizing of this bra was perfect, which means buying online avoids disappointment and shows Vanjo are serious about their bras. That said, the bridge (the bit in between the girls) is quite narrow, which could be unsuitable for some.

The matching briefs are perfectly designed to go with the feel of this set. They are low cut with rouleaux sides (that’s two little bands to us) and are brilliant under ‘boyfriend’ or slightly baggier jeans (thong available for tight jeans). If you like your bum to be completely covered (I do) then buy a size bigger than you are as they are quite skimpy.

VPL: 4/5
Unusually these briefs don’t give much of a VPL, as the satin material really takes care of unwanted lumps and bumps. I would probably be more likely to wear them under less tight jeans to avoid VPL altogether, but on the whole they are pretty good! For those in doubt, there is also a thong available to add in the set.

Style: 4.5/5
The bra set arrived before our last sunny weekend here in Scotand, so just in the nick of time. It’s cute print detail gives it a fun, chilled out feel to it with a hint of retro in the design of the bra. If you don’t normally go for ‘cute’ but are tempted, you will love this because it has all the right ingredients for a well-made, elegant set. Wear it to the office and feel ultra chic or stick on your fave weekend songs and chill out.

At £42 the bra is a pretty good price for a well-made, supportive bra with heaps of style. The briefs come in at £19, so for around £60 for the set it’s affordable enough to buy the thong to round off the set!

I was very pleasantly surprised with Vanjo as I hadn’t been expecting a bra from a small label to be so well fitting and supportive. My wallet will not be pleased with this find as I’ll be browsing the Vanjo website for more!

Here’s a new lingerie review for you, lovely readers – our resident B-cup Morna tried out “Carmen,” a delectable new set from Frankly Darling for Autumn/Winter 07. The lacy set looks amazing, but was it comfortable for our reviewer? Read on to find out!

Frankly Darling “Carmen”

Surprisingly, both the bra and panties were very comfortable. I don’t really expect underwear that looks as good as this to be comfortable, so it was an added bonus! I wore the set all day at work and completely forgot I was wearing it — the lace wasn’t itchy at all. The silk satin bridge between the cups and the matching straps were wonderful, and felt very soft against my skin.

Support: 4/5
I did have to run for a bus while wearing the set and didn’t have that uncomfortable boob-jiggling sensation, so excellent marks for support. I wouldn’t recommend wearing this for a step aerobics class, but the bra provides great everyday support.

Value for money: 4/5
The set is reasonably expensive, but better value for money as it’s both great-looking and comfortable. I’m used to paying a lot of money for either one of those, so around £100 for comfortable and attractive is pretty good.

Practicality: 3/5
While comfortable, the set isn’t the epitome of practicality: it’s hand wash only and the lace of the bra would show through a lot of tight or sheer tops. I wouldn’t pack it as a staple holiday weekend set unless I only planned to prance around in my underwear all weekend.

Style: 5/5 The panties are such a great style, very low at the front, a narrow band at the sides and plenty of fabric at the back! They made my stomach look really flat and are cut high enough to give you longer looking legs. The bra was great too; I love the colour (sage), the lace and the satin bridge between the cups especially.

VPL: 2/5
They’re big briefs and my boyfriend hates VPL, what more can I say!

Fit
The fit of both bra and panties is generous; I’m usually on the big side of medium and the panties fitted perfectly (in medium). The bra was also a good size: I’m a 34B but think I would actually have been better in 34 A (sob) as I did have a bit of a gap at the front and when I lay down.

Overall, I loved the set and will definitely consider buying from this range again!

The Short Version: Pretty miraculous, but works best for DD cups and below

Support: 5/5
Miraclesuit’s big promise is in its support, that you’ll “lose 10lbs in 10 seconds” just by putting it on. I’m not one for catchphrases, but I think they’re right about this bold claim – the suit really does suck you in at all the right places, and holds your figure while allowing you to move around comfortably. The only problem I found was with the back – it’s quite high to cover any unsightly bumps, but I found mine would roll down after just a few minutes of wear. To counteract this problem, I would recommend buying a size up to make sure the suit fits all around.

Comfort: 3/5
The suit was very comfortable to wear, but don’t ignore the cup size guidance from Miraclesuit (up to a DD-cup) — I’m a G-cup, and the “girls” barely fit into the halterneck top comfortably. As it was, I got away with it because I don’t mind showing a bit of cleavage, but more modest readers might have been horrified by the amount of décolletage on show. If you’re a larger-cup and heart-set on a suit, I recommend checking out the full selection on Cyberswim and picking something that looks a bit more generously cut than my suit.

Value for money: 3.5/5
While the Miraclesuit is expensive (mom calls it my “hundred dollar bathing suit”), I think it works out as decent value for money – the quality of the fabric is brilliant, the styles are pretty timeless, and I anticipate being able to wear the suit for many summers to come. It’s not for everyone’s budget, but if you’re tired of shopping for a new cheap swimsuit every year, this might be a good option.

Practicality -4/5
Practicality was my biggest concern before wearing the suit – I worried that with all that support, the Miraclesuit would be like wearing a corset on the beach. It turns out that the Miraclesuit is tremendously practical – I wore it in the pool, in the ocean, fishing, and never once felt uncomfortable or constricted by the support fabric. The swimsuit also stayed in place, despite the fact that it’s not designed for my cup size — I had many a tumble in the ocean waves, but never once had a “wardrobe malfunction.”

Style: 4/5
I chose one of the more “stylish” Miraclesuits (there are plenty of solid colour options), and loved the look of the suit. The little lavender pleats were adorable, the halterneck style is cute and well-cut, and it’s just generally a cute little suit for romping around on the beach. I wore mine with a big straw hat and big sunglasses, and felt terribly Jackie O, dahhling.

Overall, I really loved this suit and how it made me feel — I didn’t miraculously transform into a thinner woman, but i confidently walk around in the suit without feeling self-conscious under the public gaze. That alone is a summertime miracle!

Want to be the talk of the party? Always wanted to have a tattoo but your mum wouldn’t let you (and, let’s face it, you were too scared)? Here’s a pair of tights that will kill two birds with one stone: Pins and Needles Brand have not only created some amazing Italian-made tights, but they’ve printed a range of eye-catching tattoos on them.

Unlike many “novelty” products, these tights are the real thing. Made with a sheer Spandex and Lycra, they look and feel invisible and are comfortable to wear. Best of all, don’t have that horrible wrinkly effect on the front of your ankle that make you look like your skin is trying to gravitate south.

With five different designs and a practical see-through ‘storage pot,’ these ‘Tattooed Pins’ are serious tights with a fun twist to them. A word of caution, though — they are certainly not for the introvert and will need a pair of killer heels and a dose of confidence to carry them off. Believe me, they will get noticed!

However if you are the type (and, secretly, aren’t we all?) to want to play the bad girl, get these tights on and start getting some attention!
