What’s Your Style?

Our lingerie personality quiz is immensely popular and we love hearing what people have to say about the outcome of their chosen answers. Needless to say, the Knickers girls have multiple personalities and our love for knickers really has no boundaries, but we do have certain criteria when we choose what we wear. It could be how we feel on a given day: are we working, are we going out, what mood are we in or what feels best under a certain outfit. And we know for a fact it’s not only us who have drawers filled with a vast array of different types of knickers.

Knicker trends come and go while the same, basic styles remain. Those flummoxed when faced with the choice of a shortie or a string may like to take a look at Panty Salad, where knickers are neatly arranged into styles (you may find yourself becoming dizzy, in more ways than one). Naturally we veer towards comfort when choosing knickers, which for some may mean silk and for some it could mean scratchy nylon; whoever we are and whatever our (lingerie) personality, we will choose what is best for us.

Not wishing to get into the realms of psychology, it’s never the less interesting to take a good look at how you take care of your knicker drawer, it can be very revealing! Have you ever wondered why your knicker drawer is the tidiest among all the others? Or perhaps it’s the untidiest? If you’re anything like me you’ll have colour-coded your underwear into light and dark and sectioned your knickers into different categories; it makes life a heck of a lot easier when you’re bleary eyed in the morning. However even I realise the fact that I don’t colour-code or categorise anything other than my underwear means more than pure practicality. Our underwear drawers contain our most intimate garments and what we put in them and how we take care of them is likely to tell us a lot more than we think!

Wonderful Ways With Wood!

As a child I remember learning how to make recycled paper – it was a messy business and quite honestly it didn’t produce anything worthy of using a pen on. Whizz forward a few decades and recycled products have hit big business.

Of all the recycled products I’ve come across this has got to be one of the sexiest: recycled pine-tree fibre lingerie – made in France. This incredulous-sounding product is so appealing I’m willing to do pretty much anything to get my hands on it. Among its attributes g=98 lingerie boasts temperature-regulating comfort and cashmere softness – not necessarily what we’d expect to hear from a Pine tree.

At a pretty reasonable 28 Euros for a sexy shorty, I’m pretty much hooked. And as the shorty skips its way into my shopping cart, I’m finding myself clicking on ‘continue shopping’ as I wistfully look at the equally reasonable leggings!

Comforting Cotton

Silk and Organic Cotton at Greenfibres

No matter which lingerie personality you are, there’s sure to be a pair of comfortable cotton knickers filling a cosy place in your lingerie drawer. I recently discarded my old favourites and am still waiting to fill the void they left.

After much searching these rather lovely (in a comforting way) and simple silk and organic cotton knickers (£23.99) at Greenfibres attracted my attention. In terms of price they aren’t going to satisfy those who normally go for a five pack at the supermarket, but you can always treat yourself to one pair to go alongside your regular-priced cotton pants (for these try Gossypium, priced around £3)!

Violet Haze by Enamore

It goes without saying that when we talk ethical, we have to mention Enamore: cute, flirty and downright sexy, Enamore show no signs of slowing down when it comes to lingerie. We loved their Bedrock collection, and this season their Violet Haze shorts (£42) are not only ticking the ethical boxes, they’re bang on with colour, style and of course fabric. Unless you have a kind wallet, these aren’t going to be your everyday knickers; but considering they’re made to order and made of silk and English lace (all ethical of course), the price tag seems tame compared to some!

With something to suit pretty much everyone (remember those Gossypium £3 knickers at ByNature), we’re sure a New Year’s resolution like this is going to stick – after all, the great thing here is: no withdrawal is needed!

I can guarantee I’m not alone in admitting my tummy does a flip when I see beautiful lingerie. Occaisionally I have my sensible head on and know it’s time to update my ‘functional’ lingerie drawer – but every now and then all I want is pretty, frilly, silky pieces that may never be seen on…

Luxury we dream about

Strumpet and Pink Pom-Pom

There is always something we’ve had our eye on – and it usually comes with a pricetag we haven’t yet been able to afford (or it would already be safely tucked away). This kind of lingerie is a bit like a first love: we never forget about it and we always hanker after it – even when (in our lucid moments) we know it just ain’t gona happen.

If ever I had to choose a drool-over-and-dream-about-it piece of lingerie, it would probably have to be Strumpet and Pink’s knickers. I would be intrigued to hear from those who have actually had the pleasure of wearing them, because to me they’re the kind of knickers made by fairies who exist in my best dreams. If I could ever actually have a pair I probably wouldn’t know what to do them – like a fantasie that’s always intended to remain one, there’s just something about the thrill of imagining.

The justified purchase

There are some things we know we shouldn’t do, but we do them anyway: justifying a ‘naughty’ purchase is an art in itself – once you’ve justified however, you can find yourself pressing the ‘buy’ button before you’ve even checked you’ve entered the right size. A quick and justified buy is often the most thrilling (as long as you can afford it) – but, I hasten to add, it does have a tendency to end up with all the other ‘must have’ items in your drawer.

The problem with these types of buys is that the chosen pieces are usually so adorable (see above) we somehow can’t convince ourselves we could do without them. This is when trusted friends come into their own: providing they have their sensible head on, they can usually persuade us otherwise – though entice them into your sticky web of justification and they’ll be pressing that ‘buy’ button for you.

It’s all fun in the end

What Katie Did Frilly Knickers
The thrill of buying frivolous and frilly is sometimes needed, here the sensible thing to do is to keep those dreams of spending half our month’s salary and just go for fun. A pair of cute frillies is all you need sometimes – the best are those that (are inexpensive and) look fabulous on a gorgeous model – and so what if they do stay in your drawer forever…isn’t it the thrill that counts?

I can think of many things that could be better, if only they were bigger. I assure you the list isn’t as exciting as you may think, but I have plucked one thing from it which may attract your attention: Knickers. Don’t get me wrong, I like a thong and a small, sexy knicker from time to time, but for everyday wear the big knicker seems to be the in the winning team at the moment.

The ‘Big Knicker’ euphemism

Fleur of England – Something Blue Shorties

The phrase ‘big knicker’ doesn’t really evoke anything close to sexy, so lingerie designers have really done us all a big favour by giving us some great euphemisms for the aforementioned undies. ‘Shorties’ is a favourite: type the word into your favourite search engine and you’ll be amazed by the variety of different styles on offer – some have legs, some don’t, some are hipsters and some don’t really qualify as a shortie (in my eyes) – I also see the shortie being used as an alternative for what I would class as a big knicker, and why not.

At the moment I don’t care what my knickers are called, as long as they’re big; and by big I mean they come up past my hips – around tummy button level if possible. Big knickers also need to be comfortable and look nice, if not darn right sexy – and it is possible – just take a look at Fleur of England’s shorties: they tick pretty much every single box in terms of what I want for a gorgeous, luxurious, big knicker.

What to do when your wallet won’t allow luxury?

Pure Silk Knickers at Patra

Much as I am usually able to justify almost any purchase and much as I would love to, even I can’t justify buying a multi-pack of luxury big knickers right now – so is the ‘big knicker’ debate going to fail at the second hurdle? I say no: there are plenty of ways to go large without going bankrupt or compromising on luxury.

Silk is one of my favourite fabrics and I just love the idea of big silk knickers – and at £7.50 I love the idea even more. Just take a look at the beauties above: they’re the kind of knickers I want to put on when it’s chilly outside, and given the fabric, come the warmer weather, they’ll be perfect as well! They’re definitely an all round winner in a ‘cozy cutie’ way and they won’t break the bank.

Back to basics

Wacoal Cotton Supima Briefs

Occaisionally basics are exactly what the doctor ordered, and when it comes to basics supima cotton is a winner. Softer than soft, supima is a luxurious alternative to the usual cotton knicker; Wacoal have a fabulous-looking big brief with a band of lace that makes them just a bit different from the basics we’re used to, and at a fairly reasonable $22 they’ll give you the quality needed for a great, big knicker. For some these knickers will get the thumbs up for sexiness, for others they’ll be a staple basic in your undie drawer; whatever you buy them for, they’re a brilliantly big knicker in my book!

So, to answer the question: can big really be better? I say yes – if big is your thing.

Katies bargains continue to amaze us – here’s what she thinks of her latest sunwear acquisitions!

Through a series of events I realized I would be planning a staycation in the mid-west this summer instead of a beach vacation; fortunately, the pieces I purchased would easily adapt to my new plans.   I recently posted about the Seaton Surf Outlet Sale, Calida of Switerland, Surfmonk and the Gravis shoe sale and I must say I’m quite pleased with the service, shipping speed and most of all the products themselves.

Surf Seaton Hats

Whether I’m in the mid-west or on the west coast sun is an issue, so when I saw the luxe surfwear from Seaton (an L.A. favorite) at up to 90% off, I was off and running!  I managed to pick-up the paisly aqua and the white chain print hat ($5 each, reg. $69 each) and a lightweight cotton hoodie for $25 (reg. $138).  The hats are super cute and so sturdy I can wear them in the water.  The hoodie with shorts and a tank top in the evening have the perfect staycation casual, instead of “I’m bumming around the house in a sweatshirt” feel.  I really wish I’d  bought two, alas only the XSml & Sml size hoodies are available now.

Calilda of Switzerland

A good lightweight cotton gown is in order for warm humid night which lead me to buy and try out the Calida pajama shirt for $8  (reg. $98).  I really wish I had ordered two of these, especially now that the sales price has jumped back up to $32.  I like the tuxedo-style button front and silky-soft cotton material – again it takes hanging out at home to the next level when you’re wearing nice pjs!

Surfmonk Robe

The Surfmonk Classic Robe for $75 (reg. $225) was everything I thought it would be (please note: if you are short, like I am, you will need to have it hemmed).  It’s so cozy soft and it covers me from head to toe, keeping the chill and the mozzies away.  If it’s still available at Shopintution run, don’t walk, and pick one up – even at ‘just’ 60% off  I’m thinking of picking up another one as a spare!

Gravis Shoes

The Sierra Snowboard’s Gravis shoe sale was great; flipflops for $3 (reg. $15) and the slip-on from $5 to $12 ($35 – $55) are outstanding and looked great with the Seaton hoodie.  The leather flipflops preform brilliantly even after they get wet, the leather slip-ons not so much, but at only $5 and having not actually stated they were water shoes, soaking them was probably not my best idea!  Please note: I researched Gravis before buying them and found they run about a half size small, so keep that in mind, especially if you’re buying without trying.

All in all this was yet another successful bargain shop!

I’m a sucker for most lingerie, and have a beautifully eclectic collection to show for it; when it comes down to it though, I adore vintage-inspired, simple, traditional styles. These French Knickers really are simple: a classical pattern is used thoroughout the collection, with a few cute, heart-shaped buttons here, a bit of lace there – and a selection of beautiful colours.

Upon arrival of the knickers I opened the package and found the much-anticipated, sparkly, organza envelope in which the knickers are sent (I still use my envelope to store mine in). The Josette Knickers were exactly what I expected: lovely silk, delicate cotton lace, and so traditional it was like one of spectacular vintage finds you’ve always dreamed of.

Simply French Knickers – The Collection

Genereously cut, my Knickers are a UK size 12 (which is what I am) and as I generally buy one size up when it comes to knickers, I was very happy to find the sizing true to its description. Thinking I could only wear these under a dress for fear of VPL, it was another pleasant surprise when I pulled on a pair of snug-fitting jeans and found I could show my jeans-clad derriere without looking like I had tucked my dressing gown down the back. As the Knickers have a delicately elasticated waistband, they are very comfortable; they’re not designed to be worn with low-waisted jeans (i.e the type that require a flat stomach) but if you do insist on this combination, expect a similar look to when you’re wearing your partner’s boxers.

Overall I love the silky knickers, and wish with all my heart that I loved ironing as much, because in order to keep them looking like they should, you do need to give them the respect they deserve: handwash, iron on a cool setting and store in a suitable (sparkly) bag. Well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

We love it when we come across a design that stops us in our tracks: browsing through FairyGothMother’s delightfully dangerous online store, we came across the Miss Katie corset collection that did just that!

Miss Katie’s been designing for more than ten years, initially using latex for a more specialized corset, now using more ‘wearable’ fabrics such as silks and taffetas. Our absolute favourite among the collection is the
Taffeta Wide Collar Corset £315 (left); adorably beautiful, the sailorette collar acts as the perfect frame for a gorgeous cleavage, the red ribbon lusciously romantic.

The fantastically fabulous Mint Siren have just unveiled their Spring/Summer 09 collection!
Silk chiffons, silk satin and power netting are all part of the almost theatrical (and dare we say it again, Victorian) designs by the very talented Josefine Wing, who has wowed us before with her lingerie.

Is It Nice Or Is It Naughty?

What we love about Mint Siren is the eclectic mix of designs living side by side: silk satin bloomers and a camisole with bows in pink and raspberry may be cute, but have a little secret upon closer inspection! The black, open-bras and teensy thongs are full on vixen; with a couple of large (detachable) bows however, the almost fetish-like design becomes softer and more playful – team it with tie side knickers and you could almost forget how ‘naughty’ this bra really is!

As you will already know we adore accessories, and when we came across these adorably sexy Anna knee socks £25 at Harrogate last August, we were utterly smitten. Cotton rich (so they are properly opaque), the socks are treated to a silk bow and look incredible with a skirt – which Josefine and her lovely assistant so delightfully showed!

It was less than a year ago when we came across two new mastectomy lingerie labels that gave us hope that there were in fact pretty mastectomy bras out there. We’ve just spotted a couple of ‘must-have’ pieces at luxury online boutique, Silk Storm, and have engraved them on our wishlist. The Caresse Sensuelle Camisole set comes from Aubade’s new and refined loungewear collection, which has un petit peu more than we’ve seen from Aubade’s recent collections. Made in silk, the camisole and briefs £115, have that delightful understated sexiness the French are so adept at getting right: it’s the sheer fabric, the plunging neckline and the bows which all add up to deserve its perfectly sexy name ‘Caresse Sensuelle‘.

Girardi – Hot Italian Legwear

Over to Italy where sexy elegance is de rigeur, and hot legwear the height of fashion..
We adore chic legwear and Girardi has pushed our buttons ever since we spotted their sexy knee high socks; we’re now back in danger zone with Girardi’s Luxe hold ups with white lace and darn cute bow tops, which at £25 are at the top of (this week’s) wishlist!

The Harrogate Lingerie Exhibition 2009

In spite of the current economic climate, this season’s Harrogate lingerie exhibition was upbeat and full of lingerie happiness: We saw Valery, who with an incredible new collection were more than fulfilling their newly awarded title of Designer of the Year 2009; the fabulous Sally Jones collection, the newly launched Kiki by Kirsty Doyle as well as Nancy Dell’Olio’s beautifully decadent nightwear label, and the gorgeous new maternity label, Cake Lingerie.

Harrogate also saw daily shapewear fit seminars with Maidenform, the ‘newly revived’ classic shapewear label who are going down a storm with the likes of Lady Ga Ga!

The Highlight Of Harrogate: The Fabulous Catwalk Show!

The highlight of this season’s show had to be the catwalk show! We always love watching the models showing off gorgeous lingerie, but this time there was a marked difference from all the other shows we’ve seen: from the setting to the music to the perfect styling, this catwalk show was actually mesmerising.

The polished show was put together by Production Element, a company newly launched by two talented young men: Johnny Vukasovic and Andy Nurse. Together with the duo’s creative juices and the magnificent styling efforts of Fran Lee, we experienced a sparkling performance by the models who looked like they enjoyed every minute of the incredibly well-thought-out choreography.

Fluffy, animal print dressing gowns were given a ‘gangster’ type theme (main image, top) and Gossard’s lingerie a gorgeous, flamenco inspired dance! The De Montford’s graduates weren’t left out of the spectacular either: Hannah Weeks’ tuxedo piece was topped off with a bowler hat and umbrella – musical style, and Katie Turner’s gorgeous frilled piece got the sexy sailor look.

We’ve always loved going to Harrogate, but we’ve never been quite so impressed with the catwalk show as this year – we just hope we’ll be treated to the same luxury in the Summer!

Lingerie and Swimwear Exhibition Harrogate

The largest lingerie event in the UK, Harrogate Lingerie and Swimwear Exhibition, runs from the 22nd until 24th February: With glamorous new brands such as Kiki by Kirsty Doyle and Nancy Dell’Olio Nightwear; Estonian label Bon Bon and Australian maternity label, Cake Lingerie, this promises to be yet another successful show!

Retailers and those in the industry will be pleased to know that along with new brands, we’ll also see the gorgeous new Sally Jones and HotMilk collections as well as the return of brands such as Elle MacPherson (who are now going up to a G cup!), Fantasie and Calvin Klein. And, if you are keen to meet up with fellow retailers to chat and have a drink with the Harrogate team, why not pop along to the new networking event at the Old Swan Hotel from 8.00pm!

There will of course be the daily fashion shows and you’ll be treated to a special presentation by the lovely Nancy Dell’Ollio and celebrity stylist Faye Sawyer’s exclusive ‘B*Gorgeous Fashion Show’. The Lingerie Collective At London Fashion Week!

A brand new lingerie event is exhibiting at the London Fashion Week from the 20th to 24th February!

The ladies behind the brilliant brands: The Modern Courtesan, Lascivious, Bebaroque, Ell & Cee and Fred and Ginger, have got together to form ‘The Lingerie Collective‘!

Keen to promote and increase awareness of the smaller ‘directional’ designers, the talented designers are delighted to be bringing together their creative minds and taking part in one of the most high profile events in the fashion calendar.

On the 24th February, as a grand finale to their exhibition at the London Fashion Week, The Lingerie Collective have organised an event at Mint Leaf, London (organised by The Button Club) where all the brands showing as part of The Lingerie Collective will be on the catwalk!

The Newly Launched Label and Boutique ‘Simply French Knickers’

If you’ve always yearned for a pair of classically-designed French Knickers but never found the perfect pair, you’ll understand why Josephine Pitcher, designer of Simply French Knickers, decided to start her own label.

Frustrated with the lack of simple, but beautiful French Knickers on the market, Josephine and her partner set out to build their online business selling only French Knickers; after two years and a lot of hard work the couple have finally launched their label!

Anybody traveling via air knows that recent restrictions have made packing a challenge; most airlines now charge for each checked bag and impose a weight limit,so efficiency is key. As Katie does a lot of traveling, she decided to try out a pack of Flingz and see how they fared…

My DH and I just got back from 6 days and 3 hotels in Cabo San Lucas.  We needed fishing clothes, dinnerwear, beach gear, casualwear as well as the usual bits and pieces to fit in our large Timberland pack, and I can tell you this, it was great to be able to instantly put your hands on a clean pair of underwear, without the aggravation of digging through a well-packed bag! The fit was great, they’re washable, great quality (made of 95% cotton and 5% elastane), comfortable and eco-friendly, which was a concern, because I was under the impression that they were disposable – the thongs all have printed washing instructions on them and their website states:hand wash for best result. They wash great and dry quickly, leaving you with a clean pair and a clear conscience!

Could you do the same with thongs you already own or use the actual bio degradable paper thongs?  That depends.  A certain brand makes an anti-bacterial thong for about $25 a pair, Flingz are $18 for a 3 pack and are packed for you.  As for the paper disposable thong…Yikes!  I’ve tried them and I can’t think of a single good thing to say, since bunchy, uncomfortable and ugly don’t qualify!

The Verdict:
These are best suited for women who need a change of clothes away from home, like going to the gym or your modeling assignment; they’re great whether you are at home or traveling. Just remember your mother’s warning about always having clean underwear with you..

‘Audrey Amaretto‘, the stunning first collection by Australian designer Gabrielle Adamidis, is made up of beautifully hand-made silk briefs, camisoles, and a wonderfully sexy, vintage-inspired apron. It’s not often we see an inaugural collection so impeccably designed; Hopeless Lingerie oozes elegance and glamour and balances playful and sexy beautifully.
