Passion Very Willkommen!

Seldom is passion so exceptionally demonstrated than in Cabaret. Bob Fosse’s direction and choreography is one of a kind – full of life, mind blowing and ridiculously difficult! Recently I thought back to when my passion for lingerie came about: it probably started when my great aunt (born in 1900) allowed us children access to the contents of her incredible wardrobe – 30s shapewear and undergarments, stockings, wigs, and fabulous fur coats in all their politically incorrect glory. Who knew that not far off 30 years later I would still be passionate about all those treasures I found (minus the fur of course)!

Cabaret Inspired

I have a background in theatre and dance and adore the musical, Cabaret (and bored my singing teacher rigid every week, asking to sing ‘Mein Herr’); my choreographical knowledge certainly extends to being able to appreciate Fosse’s precise moves (believe me, dancing on a chair ain’t easy). My appreciation or rather adoration for the 1972 film however is in no way restricted to the dance: if you’ve never seen the film, I urge you to take a peek. The costumes worn by Helga, Christina, Inge and Mausi in ‘Wilkommen’ are some of the most fantastically designed pieces. Check out their seemingly tarty and dishevelled outfits: notice the embellished tops? The utterly sexy knicker and suspender combos? The all-in-ones? Bebaroque, Lascivious, Velda Lauder and Chanteuse are just a few that spring to mind!

Live The Dream!

Naturally the starring character, Liza Minnelli, is dressed in equally fabulous (and more obviously glam) costumes – just take a look at her costume in ‘Life is a Cabaret’ and ‘Mein Herr’ – remind you of anything? I’m thinking Zinke’s gorgeous playsuits, bodysuits by Lascivious and Andrea Billard’s must-have Paris Playsuit.

Who knows if some of our favourite designers were influenced or inspired by Cabaret? I do know that the film’s German born costume designer, Charlotte Flemming, certainly worked her magic on me and I can still lose myself in a dreamy world of cabaret designs. Luckily I know that with the fabulous designers out there I can fulfil my dream of dressing up the way I want to, even if my great aunt is no longer here.

All I need now is the Minnelli voice!

If you’ve never come across Taschen (the Cologne-based publisher), you’ve definitely been missing out! Along with slightly more risqué themes, Taschen also publish fabulous books about art, photography, interior design and fashion, as well as a host of other tantalising subjects. Benedikt Taschen, the brain child behind the company, started selling his own drawings in Cologne as a mere nine year old; since then the publisher’s name has become synonymous with iconic celebrities and imagery.

More Than Meets The Eye

Taschen’s passion for the more than occasional bit of naked skin isn’t an indication for a need to expose tasteless porn, rather it is a celebration of cult photography, art – and a little open-mindedness! Not so long ago I was delighted to receive the Gil Elvgren Taschen Pin Up book as a gift: hailed as ‘the best pin-up artist in the history of American illustration’, Elvgren’s fascinating and exciting illustrations go much further than what initially meets the eye. Playful innuendos, stories, fashion and of course lingerie all contribute to making these some of the most adorably mesmerising pictures.

Dressing Up

For those who love to dress up and pose, the recent increase in exposure of the pin-up trend will have been welcomed with open arms. We love to see pages like Rebel Pin Up with their daily dose of pin-up, submitted by those with a passion for dressing up. For those who love the images but have never had the courage or resources to hand, now is your chance to seize the opportunity to shine!

How To Do Pin Up

Contrary to belief, dressing for pin up isn’t all about finding the sexiest or most revealing lingerie. In fact, it’s much more about confidence, fun and a bit of cheekiness! Often it’s the most alluring images that show the least amount – our imaginations do the rest.
Naturally the grass is always greener on the other side: while today’s society has a tendency to promote a more androgynous figure, the iconic pin-up figure is generally of the more voluptuous variety. The latter day obsession with airbrushing out curves appears to have been the reverse in the days of Elvgren, who was far more likely to favour brushing in additional curves – pictures can be made ‘perfect’ whatever the trend. My point is: don’t worry about what you don’t have, go with what you’ve got and feel good about yourself – loving yourself is the key to looking fabulous!

What To Wear?

In the ‘good old days’ stockings weren’t just something you wore to flirt with your beau, however they still had that je ne sais quoi, and the cheeky glimpse of the top of said hosiery was certainly part of a pin-up’s allure. I remember way back trying to find ‘nylon stockings’ and ‘retro lingerie’ with my newly acquired internet skills (yes, that long ago); as I waded my way through some rather unsavoury items, both online and in second hand shops, I only ever came across items that were way out of my price range and that needed some serious attention. Luckily we now live in a marvellous world where labels and stores such as Kiss Me Deadly, What Katie Did, Lulu and Lush and
For Luna fulfil our need for adorable, retro-style lingerie, hosiery and swimwear.

For the rest you just need your imagination, and by that I don’t mean to sound rude: however what is our favourite pin-up might not be yours! Force yourself to be something you’re not and, unless you’re blessed with supermodel adaptability, you’re not going to feel comfortable. Find your fave and have a look through your wardrobe, you’ll be surprised what you can find and even adapt for your chosen pin-up look! There is always something we’ve had our eye on – and it usually comes with a pricetag we haven’t yet been able to afford (or it would already be safely tucked away). This kind of lingerie is a bit like a first love: we never forget about it and we always hanker after it – even when (in our lucid moments) we know it just ain’t gona happen.

If ever I had to choose a drool-over-and-dream-about-it piece of lingerie, it would probably have to be Strumpet and Pink’s knickers. I would be intrigued to hear from those who have actually had the pleasure of wearing them, because to me they’re the kind of knickers made by fairies who exist in my best dreams. If I could ever actually have a pair I probably wouldn’t know what to do them – like a fantasie that’s always intended to remain one, there’s just something about the thrill of imagining.

There are some things we know we shouldn’t do, but we do them anyway: justifying a ‘naughty’ purchase is an art in itself – once you’ve justified however, you can find yourself pressing the ‘buy’ button before you’ve even checked you’ve entered the right size. A quick and justified buy is often the most thrilling (as long as you can afford it) – but, I hasten to add, it does have a tendency to end up with all the other ‘must have’ items in your drawer.

The problem with these types of buys is that the chosen pieces are usually so adorable (see above) we somehow can’t convince ourselves we could do without them. This is when trusted friends come into their own: providing they have their sensible head on, they can usually persuade us otherwise – though entice them into your sticky web of justification and they’ll be pressing that ‘buy’ button for you.

When a partner is needing some TLC and a mere cuddle just won’t do, it’s time to call upon the nurse! This limited edition Nurse Nightingale outfit, by the Vintage-inspired designers at What Katie Did, is gorgeously cute and a world apart from the tacky costumes we so often see. The hot, Scottish legwear label, Bebaroque, has been awarded Best Accessory Designer at the Scottish Fashion Awards! Congratulations are in order for Chloe Patience and Mhairi McNichol, the two beautiful girls behind Bebaroque, who only started their company up a year ago; since then, their combined talent and hard work has paid off, with Vogue demanding a pair of custom-made tights to be shipped to New York for a photo shoot, and boutiques country-wide falling over themselves to become the latest stockist for the stunning, hand-printed, and embroidered legwear. As we found out ourselves, the tights are definite headturners, and, having visited the girls at their studio where we saw designs in the making, we’ve been lucky enough to see the girls’ newest collection – and acquire yet another addiction!

Modern Courtesan Celebrates A Year Online

Always up for a party, Modern Courtesan are celebrating their first year online; over the past year, we’ve seen MC bring out some beautifully saucy collections, including their cute limited edition Bunny Tail thong and their playful ‘Do Disturb’ Gift Box, and, most recently we’ve seen MC launch their lustful, new Casino Collection. As we popped in to raise a glass to them on Saturday at their launch night, we know the array of beautiful lingerie in an equally beautiful shop will entice lingerie lovers who like some good fitting advice and a chance to be treated like a princess for the day.

Labelle Fairy Corsets

Labelle Fairy has been making corsets for almost three years, supplying a range of theatrical and historical events.
